Pirates baseball splits pair of district games

The Pirates baseball squad split their last pair of district games as they fell at North Lamar before bouncing back with a big win over Paris last week.
The Pirates outhit the Panthers of North Lamar in their matchup March 21 but Pittsburg had trouble getting runs across the plate. Pittsburg picked up six hits in the game while North Lamar had five, but the Panthers picked up the win, 5-1.
North Lamar grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring one run on a hit, a sacrifice bunt and a single. The Panthers added four more to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run and a two-RBI double.
Pittsburg’s lone run came in the top of the seventh as Trace Burns led off with a single and later scored on a single by Charlie Mitchell.

Lady Pirates down visiting Paris Lady Wildcats, 18-4

The Lady Pirates picked up a lopsided win at home last Tuesday as they cruised past the visiting Paris Lady Wildcats, 18-4.
The Pittsburg offense was hitting on all cylinders throughout the contest as the Lady Pirates scored 18 runs and sent 32 batters to the plate through the first three innings of the win.
Justonni Farmer led the Lady Pirate offensive attack through the first three innings with three singles, two steals and an RBI while being hit a pitch once and also scored four runs. Jasmine Walker picked up a double and two singles with three RBI’s and scored two runs while McKenzie Blackstock added a three-run inside-the-park home run.
Erica Hopper started the game in the pitching circle for the Lady Pirates and picked up the win while Bailey Smith also saw action.

Pirates soccer loses playoff to Kilgore

Pittsburg’s Jacob Martinez (13) tries to get the ball past a Kilgore defender in Pittsburg’s matchup with the Bulldogs in the Area playoffs Friday. The Pirates let 1-0 at the half but could not hold on in the second half as Kilgore scored three unanswered goal to pick up the win. Martinez scored the Pirates on goal of the game with 6:08 to play in the first half.

Pirates junior varsity track team wins home meet

The Lady Pirates varsity and Pirates junior varsity teams earned another top finish last week as both teams were in action at home for the Pittsburg Relays.
The Lady Pirates won first place in five events on their way to winning the meet as the team finished with 145 points to beat out Mount Vernon (92), Winnsboro (86), Hughes Springs (81), Harmony (56) and Avinger (18).
Denasia Watson picked up a top finish for the Lady Pirates in the shot put for the second straight meet as she won the event with a toss of 36 feet, 5 inches. Taylor Leonard also placed in the event for the Lady Pirates, coming in sixth with a toss of 29 feet, 1 inch.
Ayanna Palmer had the only other individual first-place finish for the Lady Pirates as she won the long jump competition with a leap of 15 feet, 6 and a half inches.

Pirates pick up 7-4 win over Patriots

A big sixth inning was the difference for the Pirates Tuesday evening as they picked up a 7-4 victory on the baseball diamond at Prairiland.
Pittsburg carried a slim 3-2 lead into the sixth inning before scoring four runs to pull away for the win.
Caleb Banks led the Pirate offense with a pair of hits, including a solo home run, while Kason Newman and Garrett Truitt each added a hit and two RBI’s each. Brandon Colbet, Charlie Mitchell, Johnathan Boyd, Trace Burns and Cody Perry also had hits for the Pirates in the win.
Colbert started the game and picked up the win for the Pirates, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out seven in four innings of work. Truitt picked up the save, by striking out two batters in the seventh inning.

Lady Eagles sweep Ouachita Baptist

The Northeast Texas Community College Lady Eagles (NTCC) softball team swept their doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist College on Monday. Game one ended with a 6-1 Eagle victory and Game two finished early with a 10-2 run-rule victory.
Hailey Dixon led the Eagles, giving up one run in the opening inninng and allowing only five hits during the remainder of the first game of the afternoon. Kelsey Moulder and Jennifer Miller drove in a total of three runs in the third and the Eagles tacked on three more by the end of the game.  Dixon picked up the win.
Abigail Jobe gave up two runs early in the second contest.  However, after finding themselves in a hole, the Lady Eagles came out on fire in the bottom of the fifth. Darby Davis kicked off the inning with a single to center and after an onslaught of hits that produced numerous RBI’s, the Lady Eagles scored enough runs to end the game with a run rule. Jobe picking up the win for the home team.

Pirates baseball wins two over spring break

The Pirates picked up a pair of wins this week as they used an eighth-inning rally to down Mount Pleasant Wednesday before picking up a 14-0 win over Daingerfield Thursday.
The Pirates built a large early lead before cruising to a 14-0 win over Daingerfield Thursday. Pittsburg scored five in the first inning and added six more runs in the second and the Pirates built a quick 11-0 lead.
Charlie Mitchell got the biggest hit of the day for the Pirates in the bottom of the second as he launched a 2-2 breaking ball over the left field fence for a towering three-run home run that put Pittsburg up 9-0 at the time. Mitchell finished the game 1-2 at the plate.

Lady Pirates drop district opener to Pleasant Grove

The Lady Pirates opened district play on the road at Pleasant Grove Friday as they fell to the Lady Hawks, 5-3.
Pleasant Grove jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings but the Lady Pirates offense came to life in the top of the fourth. 
Morgan McCellon walked and later scored the first run of the day on an RBI single by Jasmine Walker to cut the Lady Hawk lead to 3-1.
Justonni Farmer got the Lady Pirate offense starterd in the sixth inning with a lead-off single and scored on a triple by Kaycee Parker to cut the Lady Hawk lead to 3-2. Parker then scored on a single by McKenzie Blackstock to tie the game at three.

Pirates junior varsity track team wins first meet

The junior varsity Pirates earned top honors at the Mount Vernon track meet Thursday while the varsity Lady Pirates finished second and a short-handed varsity boys team came in seventh.
The jv boys racked up seven first-place finished on their way to winning the meet and also took second in six more events.
The domination by the jv Pirates began in the field event with the long jump as Pittsburg had three athletes place in the top six. Jakeviean Traylor was second in the event with a jump of 18 feet, 2 and one-half inch. Robert Hollins was second with a leap of 17 feet, 2 and one-half inch and Dejour Dowell was sixth with a jump of just over 17 feet.

Pirates earn pair of wins at Hallsville tournament

The Pirates picked up a pair on wins, lost one and saw one game end in a tie last week as they were in action at the Hallsville Tournament.
Cody Perry, Brandon Colbert and Trace Burns each had two hits for the Pirates in their opening game of the tournament Thursday as Pittsburg fought Spring Hill to a 6-6 tie. Perry finished 2-4 with a double, an RBI and also scored a run while Colbert was 2-3 with an RBI and a run. Burns was 2-4 with an RBI and also scored.
Spring Hill jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the top of the opening inning before the Pirates answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Perry led off the bottom of the inning with a single, moved to second on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Colbert.
