Cole Kilburn, son of Kim Kilburn-Knocke, won two gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke at a meet last weekend.The meet was the 16-5A District meet, held at the Texarkana College swim complex. Cole was also named the 2018 16-5A Swimmer of the Year. Cole competes as a Pirate even though Pittsburg does not have a swim team.

As I prepare to transition from the presidency of Northeast Texas Community College, to a new role in West Texas, I would like to share some farewell thoughts and observations. First, Vicki and I want to express our deep gratitude for the kindness and support we have felt from the day we arrived. We have made many friends that we will never forget. I will always consider my time at NTCC the pinnacle of my professional career and it has been an honor to lead such a fine college.

The Betty Ann Harrel Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Deken Taylor (third from right), Pittsburg High School graduate and former student of the late Betty Ann Harrel. Harrel was a long-time teacher at the Pittsburg Intermediate School and taught for more than 30 years. On hand for the presentation of the scholarship from the Harrel-Abernathy families were (left to right) Jennifer Burgess, Mary Lou Spradling, David Abernathy, David H. Abernathy, and Shelli Harrel.

Six scholarships were awarded to Pittsburg High School graduates of the Class of 2017 by Pittsburg Intermediate School staff. The Leroy Hendricks Memorial Scholarships, sponsored by Pittsburg Intermediate School, were awarded to (left to right) Esmeralda Suarez, Shalem Guerrero, Tyson Brockman, Taylor Porter, Rebekah Hicks, and Caitlyn Wildey. Hendricks worked at the school at the time of his death in 2009. The school staff raises money through fund-raising for this scholarship. Coming this fall, school breakfast and lunches will increase after Pittsburg Independent School District trustees unanimously approved the measures at their June 19 meeting.
Jean Carrell, director of CTE/ELL Services presented a report to the school board that was broken into two segments -- adult meal pricing and student lunch pricing.
She reported that current pricing for adult meals is not in compliance with applicable guidelines. 
Carrell recommended that adult meal prices be increased from $3.50 to $3.75 to bring the program into compliance.  
The increase would become effective during the 2017-18 school year.

HOUSTON -- Taryn Keefer, a student at Pittsburg Intermediate School in Pittsburg ISD, has been selected to travel to Houston/Galveston to participate in a summer 2017 Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. 
Her selection was based on her outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, involvement in school and community activities, and a nomination from her teacher Ashlee Perry. 
She will join a delegation of outstanding students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas and its leaders. Keefer will visit significant sites in the Houston/Galveston area including NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Moody Gardens, San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, Battleship Texas State Historic Site, the Port of Houston, Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts, The Health Museum, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
