Pirates drop pair to Paris, Liberty-Eylau

By Jeremy Weber

The Pirates dropped to 10-10 on the season last week with a pair of losses to Paris and Liberty-Eylau.
The run-and-gun offense of the Wildcats was too much for the Pirates to overcome Tuesday as Pittsburg fell at home to Paris, 67-28. The Pirates kept things close for a quarter and trailed by only four after one quarter of play, 13-9. It was all Paris from there as the Wildcats used a 36-10 run over the second and third quarters to build a 49-19 lead heading into the fourth.
The Pirates did get a pair of three-pointers from Sir Charles Perkins in the loss and the team shot a season-best 8-9 from the foul line.
Perkins led the Pirates with eight points in the loss while Ty Smith added six, E.J. Hill and Jakevion Traylor each scored four, D.J. Hughes added three points and Markevious Traylor scored two.

Pirates down visiting Yellowjackets, 58-51

By Jeremy Weber

A strong second half was the difference Tuesday night as the Pirates rallied in the final 16 minutes to pick up 58-51 win over the visiting Mineola Yellowjackets.
Electrical issues at the main Pittsburg High School gym forced the game to be played at the junior high school and also cut into the Pirates’ practice time this week. According to head coach J.B. Littlejohn, the lack of practice time had a large effect on the game.
“It was an ugly game, but that was what I was expecting,” Littlejohn said. “With power out in our main gym, we really didn’t get much quality practice last week and it showed on the court.”
Sir Charles Perkins opened the game with a corner three for the Pirates and scored eight points in the opening frame as Pittsburg jumped out to a quick 14-10 lead.

Lady Pirates win at Palestine, 47-26

By Jeremy Weber

The Lady Pirates picked up a win on the road Friday as they beat the Lady Wildcats in Palestine, 47-26.
A close game through the first half, the Lady Pirates turned up the defensive pressure to pull away for the for in the second half. The Lady Pirates were able to pick up the win despite having less than ideal practice conditions this week as electrical issues in the main high school gym had the team looking for places to work out.
“We had to practice in three different gyms last week. It was crazy,” head coach John Chatham said. “Sometimes we would only spend 30 minutes in one gym and then load up on the bus and move to another.”
