• The theme for the Frederick Douglass Alumni Association’s 17th grand reunion is “Keep the Dream Alive.” It is also the association’s mission statement.

• Douglas Hoppock, a professor of theatre at Northeast Texas Community College, is honored by theater alumni.

ETMC Air 1 relocates to Pittsburg

One of ETMC’s Air 1 emergency helicopters has a new home base: ETMC Pittsburg. ETMC has been providing emergency helicopter services to the northernmost counties of its service area since 2005. “By having a helicopter in this region, we are able to make sure patients in critical emergency situations arrive at ETMC Tyler’s Level I trauma center within the ‘golden hour,’ significantly improving their chances for recovery,” said Kelly Cox, program director for ETMC Air 1. Having a helicopter stationed at ETMC Pittsburg will provide additional bene ts for patients, said J. Warren Robicheaux, hospital administrator. “We are excited to welcome ETMC Air 1 to the hospital,” he said. “Its presence on campus will allow for faster transfers from our emergency department.

Five students awarded scholarships

Five scholarships were awarded to Pittsburg High School graduates of the class of 2016 by Pittsburg Intermediate School sta and the Harrel-Abernathy families. The Leroy Hendricks Memorial Scholarships sponsored by Pittsburg Intermediate School was awarded to Brian Baca, Payton Kennington, Chesney Davis, and Ashlynn Henson. Mr. Hendricks worked at the Intermediate School at the time of his death in 2009. The school sta raises money through fund-raising for this scholarship. is is the rst year for the Betty Harrel Memorial Scholarship. Mrs. Harrel was a long-time teacher at the Intermediate School and taught for 30 plus years. She passed away in January of this year. e rst recipient for this scholarship was Karla Osornio, Mrs. Harrel was her teacher at one time. The Harrel-Abernathy families set up this scholarship to honor Mrs. Harrel’s love of teaching.

Frederick Douglass Alumni plans annual reunion July 28-31

The Frederick Douglass Alumni Association is planning its 21st Grand Reunion for July 28 through July 31. The Association holds the reunions every two years. The reunion will be held in the new Douglass Alumni Community Center located at 408 Terry Street. Ruth L. Burton, the chairperson of the reunion planning committee, dispersed a press release concerning the reunion. The release states there will be activities all four days, beginning Thursday morning with an alumni breakfast and everyone is encouraged to bring their yearbooks. Thursday night there will be youth from the East Texas area for gospel singing, dancing, and the promise of a surprise. All events are open to all Douglass alumni, their families and the friends of Douglass.

Unity

A unity prayer rally is being planned (tentatively) for Saturday, Aug. 6 from 3 to 6 p.m.The rally, which is just in the beginning stages according to Mary Lloyd, will include a monthly community prayer. According to Mrs. Lloyd, what began as a simple Facebook post by Tina Hallonquit Payne turned into a planning meeting for our community. A group of concerned citizens came together at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church Sunday, July 10. County Judge lets Commissioners know his intent to retire this fall

In 2008, Camp County Judge Preston Combest died on Aug. 7 at the age of 70. He had served as county judge for 14 years and on Aug. 8, 2008 Thomas Cravey was sworn in as the new county judge. Monday morning after a budget hearing with Commissioners and some staff members, Judge Cravey unofficially notified the Commissioners he would be retiring in the fall. He said he would inform them in writing closer when he decides to leave. “I don’t intend to leave someone in a bind, I wanted to give them plenty of notice in order to have a good transition. I’ll help them through the budget process and any other way I can,” Judge Cravey said.
