Drugs, child endangerment investigation is ongoing

By SUSAN TAFT Contributor to The Pittsburg Gazette

Camp County Sheriff ’s Deputies Randy Huggins and Brayden Hooper were dispatched to a criminal trespass on County Road 4248 on May 7. That call quickly became a drug and child endangerment investigation. “They were notified about 10:25 that night, when a complainant called to report someone was on his property that he had placed a criminal trespass on the month before,” Camp County Sheriff Alan McCandless said. “The deputies split up and began interviewing witnesses at two houses. Deputy Hooper observed two canvas-style black tents in one of the homes. He believed the tents to be used for the growth of marijuana. He also observed a rifle laying on the back of a pickup which was taken for officers’ safety.”

Looking Back

• Mayor D.H. Abernathy and his wife, Laverne, are honored with a reception held at the Abernathy House. The event was held to honor the mayor for his many years of service to the city, and to honor Mrs. Abernathy for her many years as Pittsburg’s first lady. Mayor Abernathy officially retired after serving as mayor of Pittsburg for 52 years.

• Representatives from TXU Mining were on hand at a well attended town hall meeting May 25 to answer residents’ questions about the proposed lignite mine in Camp County. They provided a variety of data sheets, brochures and pamphlets as well as many static displays.

• Grading work is well under way at Broach Park. Heavy equipment operators using bulldozers and other earth-moving equipment are hard at work moving dirt around according to survey/grade stakes already in place.
