Things have changed in Texas

In recent months, there have been many news stories resulting from cases – both nationally and here in Texas – which focus on the failures within our justice system in the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases, particularly child sexual abuse, in the early 1980s and 90s. Like most Americans, I find myself heartbroken for the victims who did not receive the justice and healing they deserved, and equally troubled by instances involving wrongful convictions resulting from bad evidence, usually resulting from the compromised statement of a child victim or witness. However, I also find myself encouraged by the progress that has been made in the way that investigations are conducted and the modern day practices which have transformed this process.

We sure do miss her

city limits
by Debbie Knox

Since she left last September, I haven’t had the time to write about my long-time newspaper partner in crime of almost 40 years, Susan Taft.
It’s impossible to share all the shenanigans we’ve had together. She literally grew up before my eyes when she started to work here in the 70s. She was a 16-year-old young lady and I was a newly married woman and relatively new to the community.
I just didn’t get Susan at first. She came in on time everyday; started her work; never, ever said a word unless she was spoken to and continued her work until it was done. Then we went home. I had never been around someone so quiet. I thought she was an alien.
One day I had enough of all that quiet. So I would start a conversation with her that consisted of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers. Most days she offered no elaboration. How could anyone be so shy?

We are the Pirates: No mascot name change needed

Ramblings from the Press Box
By Cory Smith

This week four Houston area schools announced that they will be changing their mascot names because the current ones have been deemed “culturally insensitive.” The move will cost Houston ISD taxpayers in excess of $250,000 in order to rebrand uniforms, official school logos, and the like. The change stems from pressure put on district officials by parents with Native-American ties, and ties to the historical background of one of the mascots.
The Lamar High School Redskins will become the Texans. The Welch Middle School Warriors will become the Wolf Pack. The Huskies will replace the Westbury High Rebels and the Hamilton Middle School Indians.

Attorney General Eric Holder’s act is growing old

Attorney General Eric Holder is up to his old tricks again. During a house judiciary hearing he started the Holy land Foundation terror funding trial which turned out to be his sole purpose and the Department of Justice’s refusal to divulge documents to Congress.(Doesn’t make sense to me) There was no secret that Contempt of Congress charges could be levied against Holder for not producing these documents. When it became Rep. Louie Gohmert’s turn to question Holder, he prefaced it with this statement: “I realize that contempt is not a big deal to our attorney general, but it is important that we have proper oversight.”
