We are the Pirates: No mascot name change needed

This week four Houston area schools announced that they will be changing their mascot names because the current ones have been deemed “culturally insensitive.” The move will cost Houston ISD taxpayers in excess of $250,000 in order to rebrand uniforms, official school logos, and the like. The change stems from pressure put on district officials by parents with Native-American ties, and ties to the historical background of one of the mascots.
The Lamar High School Redskins will become the Texans. The Welch Middle School Warriors will become the Wolf Pack. The Huskies will replace the Westbury High Rebels and the Hamilton Middle School Indians.
