Flyswatters aren’t just for killing flies

City limits
by Debbie Knox

I might have hit the big 6-0 this year but there are some things I still remember like yesterday’s child. And one thing stands out clear in my mind: Alittle physical punishment never hurt me or any other child. After my trip to Walmart the other day, I can see not everyone feels that way.
My friend Mollye and I were reminiscing the other day and she told me something I couldn’t believe. Mollye was actually switched as a young child and I thought Mollye led a privileged life – free from physical punishment. She told me her mother got so mad at her one time; she chased her around a table full of women playing bridge. Then Mollye told me she rubbed her whelps really hard to keep them red until her dad came home where he would feel sorry for her. Now that - I can believe.

Some things are truly amazing on FM 1735

Guest Column
by Marlene Bohr Steel Country Bee
Last week I was able to attend another walk through at the campus of Northeast Texas Community College and with the start of the fall classes, the campus is a very busy place. I think back to the people who struggled and fought for and against this college in 1983 and wonder what some of them think of how it has grown by leaps and bounds and beyond.
From 1984 to 2014, student numbers and programs at the college have been just more than anyone could have imagined at the start. I think one of the most profound things to happen was the advent of the Internet. Those folks back in 1983 probably had no idea that electronic devices would be such a common place thing for living and learning in 2014. Buildings age with time and use and the college is no exception.

Why Jon Daniels is ruining the Texas Rangers

Ramblings from the Press Box
by Cory Smith

If you think about it, Dallas-Fort Worth area professional team front office bigwigs are like one big dysfunctional family. You’ve got Jerry Jones, who is the master patriarchal figure, whomust be involved in every facet of the “family.” Then, there is Mark Cuban, who is like Cousin Eddie from the Vacation movies; crazy and you never know what he’s going to say or do. Finally, there’s Jon Daniels, who is like that weird uncle that you see sometimes  and is always starting family drama—think Uncle Fester from The Adams Family. (I left out the Dallas Stars because, well, who watches hockey in the south?)

For me, selling Pittsburg is a great accomplishment

Last Friday when I was looking over the paper, I read the question for this week: “What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment?” Narrowing it down to one thing is tough, but I figured it out.
As I have said before, we didn’t plan on moving to Pittsburg. Roy got a job at TU Electric, and I grew up in Mount Pleasant. It just seemed logical that we would live there. But back then Mount Pleasant’s cost of living was higher, and the water was bad, and some of my relatives asked me about living in Pittsburg. We could always move to Mount Pleasant later.

Why teachers should make big bucks

Ramblings from thePress Box
by Cory Smith

I’m deviating this week from my usual sports themed column to talk about a special group of people who deserve some attention. If it were up to me, I’d pay all teachers in the State of Texas a minimum of $50,000 a year, no question. They have one of the hardest jobs around; I’m talking stratosphere level in terms of measurability. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released accountability ratings this past week and Pittsburg ISD came out on top. Our district surpassed every standard set by the state and set an example for our educational region.

Letter to the Editor

We should focus on the betterment of Camp County.

Dear Editor, I usually don’t get involved in things that might be politically or racially motivated, but I feel compelled to speak out. After watching many news reports, and reading many articles in newspapers, I feel it is past time for us all to move forward. So many things I see in other cities, states, and even countries, have crept into our small town. I know in some areas, things have changed, while others have remained the same. I don’t know all of the evidence that was involved in last week’s story here in Pittsburg concerning code ordinances, but I will offer my take on this.

My walk of shame at the grocery store

One Man’s Opinion
by Roy Knox

Yes I know what you are thinking, but this is a different walk of shame. I managed to contract a rather nasty infection in my left foot and after a minor surgery, it`s a crapshoot every day on whether walking is painless or next to impossible. It has caused me to utilize the electric carts at Brookshire’s.
