Rainbows and Blue Laws

One Man’s Opinion by Roy Knox

•I can’t remember the last time I have seen so many rainbows in June, but then again sometimes I forget where my boots are.

•Are you old enough to remember when stores just started to be open on Sundays? There were several things you could not buy because of the “Blue Laws.” It was a goofy law back then, just another reason the good old days were not that good. Somehow I’m guessing a Republican got that changed.

•Ann Coulter wrote this wonderful article about how “Real Americans hate soccer” and she is catching a lot of heat from the liberal media. I read it and found it funny and mostly true. Soccer is a boring sport to watch on television and they don’t have any cheer-leaders. You can’t have a real sport in America without cute cheerleaders. You claim baseball is a real sport? Baseball is just the same as golf but with more players.

The Potomac and the Brazos

Guest Column by Lois Kolkhorst Texas State Representative

Americans hold a special place for Independence Day each July 4th. Fireworks, barbecues and picnics are in our DNA.

If you’re a Texan, you have the unique opportunity and honor of celebrating your independence twice. Along with the national Independence Day, we also have Texas Independence Day every March 2. Of course, it’s not quite the spectacle of July 4th, but our Texas Independence Day is an official state holiday and an annual reminder of what makes this such a special place to live.

Things I’m almost sure of

One Man’s Opinion by Roy Knox

•Mrs. Judy Pollan of Pittsburg Independent School District will represent Region 8 in the Texas Superintendent of the Year competition. I will be wishing Aunt Judy luck, but she really doesn’t need any. When we snagged her she was already the best superintendent around these parts. I am sure of this.

•Summertime means swimming lessons for toddlers. That would be a great job for me, except I don’t know how to swim. I sunburn in about 15 minutes and I have the kind of body that scares children and moms. I could pass out towels when everyone was finished without a whole lot of fuss.

•I have been trying to watch this World Cup (soccer), but it is so boring. The players act like wimps; they fall down untouched and start grabbing their legs. It’s kind of embarrassing.

“Do it for Tony”

Ramblings from the Press Box by Cory Smith

When I was a senior in high school, one of the things I did to celebrate my 18th birthday was buy a bag of Levi Garrett chewing tobacco. At the time, I wanted to join in with the rest of my buddies who had a wad of chew in their mouth the size of a golf ball, or at least it seemed that way. Man, I thought I was big stuff, walking around spitting in a plastic cup with a paper towel wadded up in it. That was until that stuff made me as green as a Christmas tree and made me so sick I couldn’t stand it. I knew I couldn’t call my dad because he would tell me to “stop wasting money on that crap and go to class.” My mom was out of the question too, she would tell me, “I’ve told you what all that stuff can do to you and how nasty it is.” I was on my own on this one. Needless to say, I don’t chew or dip tobacco anymore.
