We are a strong community and ‘hometown proud’

On the heels of last week, The Gazette staff finished our first section of “Hometown Proud.”
The purpose of “Hometown Proud” is to tout what we do best, mainly in terms of everyday living and what Pittsburg has to offer. The response to the section was grand and if we had started earlier, (which we plan to do next year) we want to make it even better. Jana asked for stories for the paper (in her column a week or so ago) so send her a story or two on what’s going on, or what you know to be a fact of today or yesteryear. My neighbor called me Sunday and it seems they had a “Redneck Croquet” game going in their yard. They asked me to come over, but when I talked to Roy about it, and Pat (Anders) had told him some of the rules of their game and the word “snuff” was mentioned if you missed a shot, I was scared they would make me play.
One of Pittsburg’s best attributes, as a community, is to rally around a family in times of loss or need. As many of you know, we lost a young man who grew up in Pittsburg, graduated in 2010 and whose parents are deeply rooted here.  When it came time to help him, our finest law enforcement officers, Camp County EMS and staff members at ETMC did their best to help. Our hometown bonded together around the family as grief was beyond repair in the aftermath. If I know Pittsburg, we will wrap our arms around this family and comfort them during this time. Along the same lines, a struggling sick couple was surprised to find a group from their church who just showed up with no notice to help them in their yard and home. That is very typical of Pittsburg folks.
Living here since 1976, Pittsburg is a very generous and loving town. Let’s take the Prayer Tower for example. That beautiful, reverent display of God’s love is for all of us to enjoy every single day. A gift from Bo and Patty Pilgrim, I would like to think that every citizen has expressed their appreciation. . Whether you’re driving by, have used the grounds for picture taking or actually walked in and kneeled down to pray, it is a structure of beauty.  If you would like to send  them a thank you note, you may do so by writing to: Bo and Patty Pilgrim, P. O. Box 93, Pittsburg, 75686.
