Lady Pirates fall to Pine Tree 70-38

By ELLIS KNOXreporter@campcountynow.com

The Lady Pirates were outclassed by the height and speed of the Lady Pine Tree Pirates. Pine Tree began the game with a full court press that made use of Pine Tree’s speed and height advantage. Coach Ryan Herring found a way to defeat the press somewhat. However, the team was held to pretty much only one shot at the basket per possession, as Pine Tree’s height advantage dominated the boards. As usual, the Lady Pirates played hard and did not quit. Star Smith and Sydney Reynolds were high point shooters with 15 points each. The stats show the Lady Pirates put up the shots but there were only 28 re-bounds for the entire game. Pine Tree also intercepted passes and stole the ball using that height and speed advantage during the ÿrst quarter full court press. Malaysia Burns led with nine rebounds, and Taylor Bullock had five.

By ELLIS KNOXreporter@campcountynow.com

The score does not tell the story. The game was like hooking a big bass and you fight him up into the boat, then he slips the hook and flops back into the water. You had to be there to understand how close this game actu-ally was. The Pirates won the first half 28 to 24.After the first kickoff, the ball change hands a couple times. Then with 5:43 left in the first quarter the Pirate defense held and Gilmer had to settle for a field goal, 3 to Pitt 0.Then with 4:02 left in the first, the Buckeyes scored their first touchdown. Then with 37.8 seconds left in the first quarter, Deldric Shields scored the Pirates’ first touchdown on a Jaylon Jimmerson 32 yard pass. Mak-ing it Pitt 7 and Gilmer 10.

“We gave them the day off last Monday afternoon, and last Friday afternoon. So they had all last weekend, and when they came in Monday their legs were a little bit fresher, their energy level is high. We’ve had two good practices this week so far, we had a good week last week. ey’ve been a lot fresher, having about six hours not on the field, we’ve expected a lot more out of them because of that and the practices this week they have met that bar we set for them. I think we’ve had the best practices so far this year in the last two days,” Coach Baca said.
