Koe Wetzel gets ‘Male Vocalist 2016’ in January

January

Koe Wetzel and Cole Risner, both natives of Pittsburg, are up for nominations at part of the Texas Music Pickers Awards. Risner is being considered for “Newcomer of the Year,” while Wetzel is being considered for “Album of the Year,” “Artist of the Year,” and “Male Vocalist of the Year.” Koe Wetzel is named “Male Vocalist 2016” at part of the Texas Music Pickers Awards. He, along with his band, finished second in other categories as well.

Pilgrim Bank names Charlotte Brewer as president of its Wichita Falls market. Previously, she was senior executive vice president, and is the corporate marketing director and an advisory director for Pilgrim Bank. Brewer’s appointment was approved by the Pilgrim Bank board Dec. 20, 2016. She plans to relocate in January to Wichita Falls from the bank’s Mount Pleasant headquarters.

A small increase in fitness can make a difference

As we age it seems more and more important to push ourselves and organize a plan of action to exercise.

Ah yes, the dreaded word “exercise” seems to be synonymous with the start of every New Year. Some of us wait until the inevitable time we must exercise after being diagnosed with heart problems, diabetes, knee, hip or shoulder replacement but the secret to a healthy lifestyle is something that most people already know. It does help when you have an instructor of some sort – whether it’s for physical therapy or an instructor in a gym.

One person in particular who helps older folks recuperate from ailments that curb or stop their active lifestyle is Zane Richardson, co-owner and physical therapist of Kinetic Physical Therapy Associates in Gilmer.

Commissioners apply for grants

One of the first decisions Camp County commissioners will make in the New Year is whether or not to submit a grant proposal to the Texas Historical Commission to redo the windows at the courthouse or renovate the portico basement area – or both.

If the 50/50 grant is approved by the state, the county would kick in half of the money needed; bringing their total to $250,000 (which they have already put back) and the state would pay the other half.

Commissioners met last Wednesday to discuss the matter at length with Komatsu Architecture from Fort Worth, but tabled action on the matter until this week.

Countdown to closing Luminant looms

A skyline on Lake Bob Sandlin for more than 40 years will soon not shine so brightly as Luminant - Monticello will close its doors Jan. 4. Approximately 200 area employees will be affected.

In a statement issued by Meranda Cohn, corporate affairs for Vistra Energy, TXU Energy, Luminant, on Dec. 18, “Right now, we are focused on our employees and safely operating the plant through Jan. 4. After that time, we will turn our attention to the decommissioning process of the plant and future use of the site.”

Luminant is a subsidiary of Vistra Energy and announced its plans to retire the Monticello plant in early fall.

Mark Samuel McKinney

Mark Samuel McKinney passed away at his home in Pittsburg on Sunday morning, Dec . 17, at the age of 70. Mark was born July 15, 1947 in Sherman to Mark Truman McKinney and Alma “Jean” Neal McKinney. Mr. McKinney earned his business degree from East Texas State, Commerce. He was responsbile for construction and engineering at Pilgrim’s Pride for 23 years; and worked on projects in 22 states, as well as Africa, Australia, and Nicaragua. Of all of the projects Mark undertook he was most proud of the Pittsburg Prayer Tower. Mark was a Baptist. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Clements McKinney of Pittsburg; son; Mark T. McKinney and his wife Angie of Pittsburg; daughter, Kimberly Beard of Carrolton; grandchildren, Ryan McKinney, Austin McKinney, Brandi Allen, Tyler Beard, Cameron Beard, and Natalie Beard; brother, Donald McKinney of Fort Worth ; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by: his parents, and brother, Gary McKinney.

Edna Wetzel Nelson

Edna Wetzel Nelson, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Leesburg, passed away Monday morning, Dec. 11, 2017 in Mount Pleasant at the age of 79. Edna was born May 7, 1938 in Winnsboro to Manuel and Fannie Suiter Wetzel. She married Arvil Nelson on Dec. 16, 1955. In the 57 years they shared together, the couple raised three children. In 1963, she started working as a nurse, a career which would last 42 years. During that time she also worked as a nursing home administrator and was instrumental in starting most of the alzheimers care units in the North East Texas area. Edna was a devout Christian. Her christian compassion was a central element of her life, and she loved giving back to the community and doing for others. She spent many years volunteering with Meals on Wheels, was a lifetime member of Good Sams, and was a volunteer ombudsman advocate for nursing home residents. Edna was also involved in Business Women of Texas.

Services for Paul Hughes, 80, of Pittsburg, were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec . 17, 2017 at Rocky Mound Church in Pittsburg. Burial was in Rocky Mound Cemetery Mr. Hughes was born May 8, 1937 and passed away De c. 11, 2017.

Ois and Deborah Kennington will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 22. Their children, Darla Grant and Angie and spouse Mark McKinney all of Pittsburg.

After 64 years, James Cavender walks the OSU stage

After 64 years, James R. Cavender walked the graduation stage at Oklahoma State University Saturday, Dec. 16 in Stillwater, Okla. Mr. Cavender, and his wife Pat, call Pittsburg hom. In 1965, he and started their retail western wear empire right here. Now, with over 80 stores nationwide, he finally found the time to walk the stage to receive his diploma.

Mr. Cavender technically graduated from Oklahoma A&M in 1953 with a bachelor of science in animal husbandry while in Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC.) With war tensions running high, he had to report immediately to the Air Force and could not walk the stage to receive his diploma. Administrators at OSU told him to come back any time to participate in the graduation ceremony.

James’ son, Mike, said it was James’ mother who wanted him to walk the stage years ago.

Local burglaries and thefts are under investigation

The Camp County Sheriff ’s Department is investigating the theft of numerous items that were stolen in the last two weeks.

Tools, valued at more than $650, were reported missing Dec. 9.

“Deputies Bo Tucker and Anibal Perez were dispatched to Farm-to-Market Road 3384 at 6:06 that evening,” Sheriff Alan McCandless said. “The complainant said he went to his shed and discovered a Stihl skil saw and two reciprocating saws were missing. One of the reciprocating saws is a Chicago brand and the other is a Dewalt.”

Deputies Tucker and Perez had taken another report of tools missing on Dec. 3.
