Student killed in weather-related wreck

A Northeast Texas Community College student driving a 2002 Ford SUV, on his way to class last Thursday morning, died after hitting an icy patch on Highway 11 east. The victim was 22-yearold Randy Huitema.

According to the police report, Huitema skidded on a patch of ice and lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a 2015 Western Star log truck driven by Robert Lee Ivery, who traveling west.

Band gets high marks at all-region

The Pittsburg Junior High and Pittsburg High School students were selected for All-Region Band Honors for the 2018 Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Region 4 All-Region Band.

Don Reynolds, local business leader, dies

One of Pittsburg’s most loyal, contributing leaders has died. Donald W. (Don) Reynolds died last Thursday, Jan. 18, at East Texas Medical Center. He was 83.

Don, and his wife Mary, owned and operated Don Reynolds Flowers and Gifts on Pittsburg’s main street for 35 years.

The business was previously known as Pittsburg’s Greenhouse and was established in 1926 by Madeline Albright.

Mayben, Yantis appointed to Main Street committee

The Pittsburg City Council met in regular session Monday night, Jan. 8, and approved several items on a rather short agenda.

First, they gave a nod to Paul R. Mayben and Christian Yantis to again be appointed to the Pittsburg Main Street Board, serving a one-year term. The Pittsburg Main Street committee, under the direction of Rick Wall, had already approved the appointments.

The 2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial March

The 2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial march fell on his birthday this year, Jan. 15. Over 100 marchers led by the Rev.

T.J. Miles, pastor of the St. Stephen’s AME church walked down the newly named Dr. Martin Luther King Ave. from the Camp County Courthouse to St. Stephens. The marchers were joined by about 20 car loads of folks unable to walk the mile or so to the church. Dignitaries joining the march were County Judge A.J. Mason, Justice of the Peace Harold Kennington, Mayor Shawn Kennington, and City Manager Clint Hardeman. Two Pittsburg Police cars led the marchers and one followed to control any traffic.

A Cappella Choir of Wiley College to perform at the Whatley Center

The Whatley Center for Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College will host a concert by the A Cappella Choir of Wiley College Sunday, January 21 at 2:30 p.m. Wiley College in Marshall is called the “Home of the Great Debaters” because of its phenomenal, internationally-known debate team.

Yet, the A Cappella Choir of Wiley College (ACWC) holds the distinction of being the oldest internationally known organization on the campus. Founded 120 years ago as the Wiley University Jubilee Singers, the ACWC was led by conductors including Edward Boatner, William Henry Smith, Gilbert Francis Allen and Earl B. LaRue. The group is currently under the direction of Stephen L. Hayes. Recent accomplishments of the ACWC include three invitations to sing at the White House, recorded motion picture sound tracks for three films and is featured on Atlantic Records “The Birth of a Nation…Inspired By” CD singing with Grammy nominee Trey Songz

Pirate cheer team takes first place in state dance competition

The 2017-2018 Band Dance Championship cheerleading team pose with their first place plaque won at the UIL State Cheerleading Competition for their performance. Commissioners go for a courthouse renovation grant

The Camp County Commissioners’ Court met in a regular schedule meeting Wednesday, Jan. 3, with all members of the court present. With the new meeting time of every Wednesday at 8:30 starting in 2018, the meeting was short; yet productive.

The major item on the agenda was the consideration of the application for the grant for the refurbishing of the Camp County Courthouse. Previously the court had set aside $300,000 for the project, since the project would probably come to around $600,000 and change.

Sydney Waldrep is Peach Queen

July

A Camp County man was arraigned last week for a shooting at a sheriff ’s deputy outside of Pittsburg on June 28.

Robert Darrell Giles III, 24, of Pittsburg, was arraigned in District Court and charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, a first-degree felony, and criminal mischief, a third-degree felony. Bond was set at $800,000 for both charges -- $750,000 on the assault charge. He remains in the Camp County Jail.

The Pirates Field Six in All District First Team

The Pirates fielded six members of the varsity squad on the All-District First Team, offense and defense. The four on offense are junior quarterback Jaylon Jimmerson, junior wide receiver Keontae Burns, senior offensive lineman Slade Whitson, and junior Keithlen Griffin, who is all-district offense as a wide-receiver and all-district defense as a defensive back. The All-District First Team members on defense are: senior defensive lineman Cody Jones, and junior inside-linebacker Camryn Edney.
