Lee Greenwood to perform at the Whatley Center

The Whatley Center at Northeast Texas Community College will host a concert by country music icon Lee Greenwood on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. All tickets are $35 and are available for purchase online at www.whatleycenter.com. The performance is sponsored by John and Betty Traylor.

“We are very excited to host Lee Greenwood on our stage. He is a phenomenal artist and I hope you will join us for an exciting night of your favorite hits,” Carolyn Franks, NTCC Director of the Whatley Center, said.

ETMC gets new name for 10-hospital system

Ardent Health Services (Ardent) and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (UT Health Northeast) have completed the purchase of East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System (ETMC). ETMC will be combined with UT Health Northeast to form a 10-hospital system known as UT Health East Texas.

The Pittsburg Gazette welcomes new publisher

The Pittsburg Gazette is proud to introduce Matt Dierlam as its new publisher. Dierlam will be taking over for Debbie Knox, who will continue serving as managing editor during the transition.

Dierlam has family roots in south Texas around Seadrift and Victoria but eventually moved west to a small community north of Sacramento, Ca. and was involved in community newspapers there, in Alaska and most recently in Nevada.

Dierlam served his country in the U.S. Army in communications and was stationed at both Camp Humphrey Korea and Fort Hood in Texas.

Curtis Grimes Show at the Anvil

Country music singer-songwriter Curtis Grimes performed before a packed house at Anvil Brewery last Friday night. Curtis Grimes is preparing for a big year in 2018, with national headline shows with the likes of Aaron Watson already announced. Grimes is from Upshur County.

Friday is the last day to vote early; March Primary election is Tuesday

The only contested local race in the March 6 primary election is on the republican ballot where incumbent Steven Hudnall will be challenged by Gary Paul McFerrin for Commissioner, Precinct 2.

Local republican candidates, County Judge A.J. Mason and Justice of the Peace Harold Kennington, are running unopposed.

Ag riculture youth project show is this Saturday at 10

The Camp County Youth Project Show Committee is hosting the 2018 Camp County Youth Project Show Saturday, March 3 at the Pittsburg Independent School District Ag Barn Complex, located at 402 Broach Street, next to the central administration building. The s how will start at 10 a.m. with rabbits, swine, g oats, heifers, and a g mechanics projects being shown.

Also, in the Aubrey E. Pilgrim Agriculture Building (at the same location), the committee will also be hosting its Camp County Skills of Expression, which is open to all Camp County residents of any age. There will be categories of photography, art, and baked goods. For a full list of rules and categories, please stop by Texas Country Farm Supply or the Camp County Extension Office.

Black history month program honors the late Nina Johnson

After a brief prayer by the Rev. W.L. Chism, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” echoed throughout the sanctuary at Metropolitan Baptist Church as attendees celebrated the annual Black History program last Friday evening. This year’s theme was honoring “The Great Pioneer Women of Color” and the late Mrs. Nina Johnson.

Dorothy Drayton welcomed everyone. “Dear friends and well-wishers, I want to thank you for braving this inclement weather to attend this program,” she said. “We have a story to tell to the nation.”

The 2018 Miss PHS is Dea’Jah Heath

The Miss Pittsburg High School for 2018 is Miss Dea’Jah Heath. Miss Heath is the daughter of Victoria Craig and Keven Hodridge. Dea’jah is a Pirate varsity cheerleader, and is a member of the Lady Pirate volleyball, dance club and track team. Her talent during the pageant was dancing. She intends to attend Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, where she will enroll in a pre-physical therapy course of study.

Miss Taylor Bullock is first runner up, and will serve if the winner somehow cannot. Miss Bullock is the daughter of Amy and Jeff Bullock. Taylor is a Pirates’ varsity cheerleader, and is a member of the volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis teams, dance club and is a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation she plans to attend college and to seek a degree in nursing and physical therapy.

Pittsburg DECA sends 19 to State

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Students recently competed in role play events and prepared written events at the DECA District 6 Conference.
