Scholarship donations

American Legion Post 0210 (Mount Pleasant) recently presented a check for $3,000 to the Northeast Texas Community College Foundation. Steve Austin, Post 0210 Adjutant/Financial Officer (center) is pictured making the presentation to Daisy Bates (left), NTCC Advisor and Veterans Affairs Coordinator, and Dr. Josh Stewart, NTCC Vice President for Student and Outreach Services. The gift will be combined with the current Landers Veterans Scholarship and will now be the new Landers-Jessup/Reed Veterans Memorial Scholarship which will provide $300 per year to a veteran attending NTCC. Drugs, weapons found at Camp County residence

A night-long search of Samnang Ham’s residence on Highway 11 East yielded 22 military-type canisters with fuses, 15 rearms, approximately 35 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 485 grams of Xanax, and other assorted pills, rearm parts and ammunition. “At about 6:30 p.m. on May 11, I got a call from an investigator with the Greenville Police Department stating that Ham had been stopped on tra c by the Greenville K-9 o cer. e Greenville investigator was trying to con rm if we had any knowledge of drug activity concerning Ham. I advised the investigator that Ham had been under investigation here for about three months,” Camp County Sheri Alan McCandless said. “ e investigator advised Ham was in possession of dangerous drugs, methamphetamine and guns, one of which was stolen, when he was stopped in Greenville.

“Paws for a Cause” walk/run to be held for 4-legged friends

The very rst event for four-legged friends accompanying two legged friends on a 1K/5K fun run and walk, “Paws for a Cause” will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at Fair Park, across from the Pittsburg High School. Check in time for pre-registration and onsite registration is 7 to 7:45 a.m. All proceeds from the event bene t the “Titus County Shelter Friends,” which houses four-legged animals from Pittsburg too. The 1K/5K Fun Run and Walk will begin at 8 a.m. and at 9 a.m. there will be a mingle in the park before an awards presentation is announced at the pavilion at 9:30 a.m. Registration forms will be available at Pittsburg Veterinary Clinic, 203 N. Greer in Pittsburg.

Council taps around solving carnival issue

A dispute between Dr. Terence A. Cook, D.D.S., on North Avenue, County Commissioners, City Council members and e Chamber of Commerce continues over whether or not carnival rides will be able to set up the week before Pioneer Days begins. In a meeting at the City Council Monday, May 16, Allen Weatherford, executive director, for the Pittsburg-Camp County Chamber of Commerce came before the council asking for the owner of the carnival rides to be able to close the streets of North Avenue and Tapp Street the week before the event. Dr. Cook, who said in a letter dated April 30, 2016 that he has written to a legal rm out of Arlington, Va. that “helps poor souls like me.”

• Almost 400 attend a banquet honoring former Mayor D. H. Abernathy after his retirement of 52 years as Pittsburg’s mayor.

• Annie Fuller married a G.I. 52 years ago and came to America. She became a U.S. citizen and eventually moved to Pittsburg 26 years ago.

• Continuing discussion was held at the Northeast Texas Municipal Water District for expanding the Mims Water Treatment plant. Joncie Young with KSA Engineers updated procedures for the board, including the routing of the pipeline.

• Hank Gilbert, the Democratic candidate for a commissioner of agriculture, will make a campaign stop in Pittsburg Saturday.

• Lamar Hughes, from Pittsburg, recently completed his second season playing point guard for the Miles Community College Pioneers in Miles City, Mont. Hughes came to the Pioneers as an All-District and All-State performer in high school, and stepped into the Pioneer team immediately.

Sarah Shurbet earns degree in optometry

Ms. Sarah Shurbet, Pittsburg ISD class of 2008, graduated from the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO) on May 14 earning a Doctor of Optometry degree. e UHCO is the highest ranked optometry school in Texas and is ranked fifth nationwide. Sarah is the daughter of Greg and Barbara Shurbet of Gilmer and the granddaughter Juadeen Shurbet of Winfield and the late Bob Shurbet and the late Bill and Sandy Rainey.
