Burglaries and thefts under investigation

Several burglaries and thefts that occurred in the last three weeks are under investigation by the Camp County Sheriff ’s Department.

Deputy Jim Carrigo responded to a call about a burglary of a building on County Road 1264 on Aug. 15.

“At approximately 10:30 p.m. on that Tuesday, Deputy Carrigo met with the complainants who reported two air compressors, a backpack blower, weed eater, three grinders, power washer, self-propelled lawn mower, two cordless drills, a battery charger, car jack and two chain saws were among the items taken,” Sheriff McCandless said.

“We have recovered some of the property and have identified one suspect in this burglary.”

Deputies are also looking for information about an Olympic AR-15 that was reported missing from a residence on Farm-to-Market Road 557 on Aug. 21.

Car recovered two months after it was stolen

A 2006 Chrylser 300 that was reported stolen two months ago has been recovered in Franklin County.

Camp County Deputies Bo Tucker and Calvin Lamont took the call about the stolen vehicle from a business on Farm-to-Market Road 3384 on June 28.

“The car had been taken between June 24 and June 25, and on Aug. 24 Deputy Tucker received information from Camp County dispatch that the vehicle had been recovered,” Sheriff Alan McCandless said. “He contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and spoke with Sgt. Bryan Gurley who stated it appeared the vehicle had been at a residence in that county for some time. A suspect has been identified in this case but was not at the residence at the time.

“Deputy Tucker notified the owner of the vehicle and informed him that his vehicle had been recovered and where it had been towed,” Sheriff McCandless said.

Mark your calendars for HeeHaw, Nov. 4

For all who have been wondering, there will be another production of joke tellin’, foot stompin’ and hilarious antics from the whole HeeHaw gang on Saturday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m. at the newly renovated Pittsburg High School Auditorium. Mark your calendars now because rehearsals will begin soon for the all adult cast and band.

The new script, written and directed by Carolyn Anders, is sure to be a hit again this year. A special showing of the Soggy Bottom Boys is expected along with Buck and Roy (Shawn Kennington and A. J. Mason) and the whole HeeHaw Gang. Jerry French will emcee the event again this year and he is sure to get a big majority of the laughs. His wife, Deana, will debut as Minnie Pearl.

PISD finance department scores 100 percent

Along with being one of the best learning institutions in the state of Texas receiving 55 of 59 outstanding ratings and 21 of 26 academic distinctions, PISD also scored the number one in the district financial department in the state. The state of Texas rates each school district’s financial department using their “Financial Integrity Rating System, (FIRST).”

The rating is based on 2015 and 2016 data, in addition to the 2016-17 accountability ratings. To pass a school district’s finance department, the district must receive a 60 percent or above. The PISD’s finance department scored 100 percent.

The Pittsburg public schools rate as best in Texas

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) 2017 accountability report has been released and Pittsburg ISD has received many honors. TEA’s highest category is Met Standard. All Pittsburg public schools not only met their standard but in all cases surpassed it.

The Pittsburg High School has received a bronze medal from the U.S. News and World Report magazine. The U.S. News rankings include data on more than 22,000 public schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college. Pittsburg High School rated in the top 17 percent of U.S. schools.

Heather Hoover-Salomon named as top profile nominee in Austin Journal

One of Pittsburg’s top students has made a name for herself in Austin. Heather Hoover-Salomon, executive vice president of Operations at uShip, has been nominated for the Austin Business Journal’s 2017 #ProfilesinPower Award.

The daughter of Wyn and David Hoover, Heather graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and was one of the first employees of uShip.

uShip is an online global shipping marketplace that connects people to transporters who have the ability to move large, bulky items. These can range from cars to cranes, freight to furniture, and households to horses. And even strange and unique shipments as well.

Court votes to consolidate polling places for Nov. 7 election

Saying it was more cost effective since there will only be Constitutional Amendments being voted on Tuesday, Nov. 7, Camp County Commissioners decided to consolidate all four precincts for voting to the first floor of the Camp County Courthouse. Commissioners met Monday, Aug. 14 in the county courtroom for the regular monthly meeting.

I think it’s called bait and switch

When I was a young man working my first job, I had a much older man tell me what he believed was the true fact of life: “Son, if you can`t dazzle them with your brilliance, then you are going to have to baffle them with your bull…..” This is pretty much the playbook that the Democratic and Republican opponents of President Trump are using. It is political suicide to argue on the wrong side of tax reform or improvement of infrastructure.
