Pittsburg Intermediate School students heard extraordinary stories by two men whose lives were changed after 9-11-2001. Those two men were Sergeant First Class Sean Becker and Daniel Lockler. Mr. Lockler teaches at the intermediate school now but then was in the Army. Sgt. Becker is an Army recruiter today.

Children seem captivated hearing the men tell of how Sgt. Becker felt an “unwavering, undying devotion to the United States” during that time and joined the Army because of 911. He was 27 at the time.

Mr. Lockler told students how he had worked the night before on Sept. 10 and he and his wife were watching the events on television.

Pilgrim’s and Pittsburg high school teamed up to sort thousands of supplies into baggies and boxes for delivery to Texans displaced by hurricane Harvey. The boxes contained water and food, the baggies for instance contain things for babies, baby powder, pacifiers, and baby oil, or a man or woman’s toiletries, deodorant, toothbrush and paste, shaving cream, and chap sticks. The Pittsburg students representing the National Honor Society, DECA, and the student council.

Honoring Habitat for Humanity of Camp County, Texas, the organization will host “There’s No Place Like Home - The Ruby Slippers Gala,” Saturday, Oct. 14 from 7 p.m.to midnight at the Douglass Community Center, 408 N. Terry St.

The evening will consist of live entertainment by Doctor! Doctor!, dancing, a wine tasting, hors d’oevres and a silent auction. The annual event promises an evening of fun and the dress is party casual.

Proceeds from the event benefit the building program of the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity of Camp County.

Advance tickets are $20 per person or $35 for a couple; $25 per person and $40 per couple at the door.

Capital One Bank will close its doors in Pittsburg on Friday, Nov. 17 according to branch manager Kim Daily.

Mrs. Daily has been at the bank, under several names, for 40 years and she says she’s going to miss her customers.

“I’m going to miss the relationships I’ve had with my customers. I’ve been at the bank for 40 years Sept. 6, last Wednesday. She started there in September 1977 when the bank was known as Pittsburg National Bank. From there it because First Heritage, then First Service, Hibernia and finally Capital One.”

Pittsburg Rodeo Association and Faulkner Chevrolet are presenting Broncs and Bulls by Wing Rodeo Saturday night (Sept. 16), 7:30 p.m. at the Pittsburg Rodeo Arena on Highway 271 North, (next to the Dollar General Store.)

Events include bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback and ranch bronc riding, Muttin’ Bustin sign up will be at 6 p.m. and an entry fee of $20 will be collected.

There will be a specialty act by Kody Gray. Entry dates and times will be Sept. 11, 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is sanctioned by UPRA, CRRA, LRCA. All proceeds benefit Pittsburg Handicappable Rodeo. Contestants who want to participate in the specialty act with Kody Gray should call 903-379-3441

There will be $2,500 added Money and Champion Buckles for all events. Ticket prices are $10 for adults; $5 for children. All children 7 and under get in free.
