Letter to the Editor

Well let’s see if you follow your own comment: “We all aspire to be a mature people, able to listen to differing opinions without ‘slapping the dog’ out of someone that doesn’t share your same opinion. I differ in my opinion of the Charlottesville riot and President Trump. It was a real tragedy that three, not two, people died because of the ignorance and hate of the alt right white supremacists and neo-Nazis. The young lady who was killed was peacefully expressing her freedom of speech when she was murdered. I do not blame President Trump for these riots. I do blame him for not condemning the racism, bigotry, and hate of these fringe groups. I blame him for emboldening these groups who hate other because of their skin color, their religion or their race.

Dog lovers are needed to volunteer and donate to ‘Titus County Shelter Friends’

by DEBBIE KNOX

If you’re an animal lover, you will not want to miss an opportunity to help our four-legged homeless friends in Titus, Pittsburg and Gilmer. The second annual Casino event is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Titus County Civic Center and will help area homeless dogs and kitties, not only find homes but keep them alive and well.

Shelia McKelvey is the chairperson of the event and tickets are available at Bruechner Animal Clinic, First National Bank of Gilmer, Guaranty Bank and Trust (in main bank Mount Pleasant location), Mount Pleasant Pet Resort and Animal Clinic and Titus County Veterinary Clinic. (The Pittsburg Veterinarian Clinic was inadvertently left off this story as a sponsor and where tickets may also be purchased.) All proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward transferring the dogs to their forever homes and any vet bills for the injured dogs that are abused or dumped. Funds also help spay and neuter animals as well.

A church on County Road 3510 has been the site of two separate burglaries in the last three weeks.

“Deputies Calvin Lamont and Bo Tucker were dispatched to that location at 9:10 p.m. July 24. The complainant advised them he went by the church that morning to pick up his tools from a new classroom building that was being renovated, and the tools were missing,” Sheriff Alan McCandless said. “He said no one had worked in the building in more than a week. The deputies found where someone had forced their way into the building.”

Some of the tools that were taken were a Rigid 18-gauge pin nailer, a Rigid pancake air compressor, a staple gun, a miter saw and skill saw, an air hose, a six-foot level.

A mother’s journey: “Loves for Lily Ruth”

By DEANNA ROBERTSON

Many days stand out in a person’s mind—their first day of college or a new job, the day they said “I do”, or the day their child was born-just to name a few. A day that will be stamped into my internal calendar for years to come is August 31, 2017. That day, my husband Nick and I received the news that our second child was a girl! We were ecstatic, but other news was also delivered. I was told that the blood test that had been performed on me had also indicated that our daughter was at high risk for Down syndrome.
