Douglass Alumni to celebrate 22nd Grand Reunion

The Frederick Douglass Alumni Association will return to Pittsburg for its 22nd annual grand reunion July 26-29 with the theme “The Journey Continues . . .”

“This organization began in 1976 to remember and celebrate the legacy of Douglass schools. The association celebrates over four days and alumni continue to return to Douglass and Pittsburg from all over the United States,” said organizer Ruth Burton. “This will be a power- packed year.”

The event kicks off with a Gospel Fest on Thursday and it moves to an award’s night with a special proclamation on Friday. A parade complete with Grand Marshall appearance is slated for Saturday morning, and then the glamorous Grand Reunion Ball takes place Saturday evening highlighted by the crowning of the Reunion Queen. The celebration concludes on Sunday with a full worship service.

Pittsburg native marks centennial birthday

Golden Murphy II remembers when Pittsburg was just a farm town.

The grandfather to Pittsburg-Camp County Chamber Vice President Golden Murphy IV, Murphy celebrated a milestone birthday on Monday – his 100th – at Southern Wind Manor.

The nursing home threw him a party. On Sunday, Father’s Day, his family gathered around him during a birthday lunch in honor of his centennial year. The Pittsburg native and World War II veteran was born June 18, 1918 and grew up working cattle and crops in Camp County’s early days.

Chamber reaches $15,000 goal for 4th Fireworks

It took just 10 days for the “Save the Independence Day Blast” campaign to reach its $15,000 goal.

The Pittsburg-Camp County Chamber of Commerce launched the campaign May 22 and hit its first benchmark of raising half the funds needed in just three days as the fundraising committee headed by Chamber Board Member Holly Mc- Graw worked hard to drum up support from individuals and businesses.

NTCC Board swears in three members

The Northeast Texas Community College Board of Trustees swore in three members for new terms at its regular monthly meeting May 22.

Gov. Bill Ratliff swore in fellow members Sondra Fowler, Sid Greer and Dr. Dan McCauley, who all kept their places on the board after running unopposed. Fowler, who serves in Place 3 on the board, was elected to finish out the last two unexpired years of her term, which she was appointed to after John Bryan retired from the board last year. Greer, Place 4, and McCauley, Place 7, will serve full six-year terms.
