Madison Sansom signs letter of intent with Lyons College

Pittsburg senior Madison Sansom, starting Lady Pirate softball catcher has elected to sign a scholarship and letter of intent with Lyon College. Lyon College is an independent, residential, co-educational, undergraduate liberal arts college located in Batesville, Ark. Lyon is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Assistant Softball Coach Daniel Batchelor, Dallas Tigers select Coach Heath Henderson, Head Softball Coach Brandi Batchelor, Athletic Director Brad Baca, Girls Coordinator Ryan Herring, Assistant Softball Coach Randy Caudle, and Head Volleyball Coach Lori Shaw. Pittsburg Pirate FFA wildlife team advances on to State

For the first time in Pittsburg FFA History, a Pirate team has earned the opportunity to compete in the State Wildlife Contest. On Wednesday, Nov. 1, the Pittsburg FFA Wildlife Team competed at the Region 4 Wildlife Contest in Nacogdoches, at the Stephen F. Austin University’s Experimental Forest. The team consisting of Blake Kirkpatrick, Bradon Wilkes, Garyn Short and Ty Jordan, and placed fifth in Area 6, earning them a place to compete at the State Wildlife Contest in April.

Blake Kirkpatrick finished in tenth place individually, while Bradon Wilkes placed twelfth, Garyn Short placed number 27 and Ty Jordan was number 44, out of 92 students from 24 schools. Please congratulate these students on their success and hard work and wish them luck come April.

Pirate Band wins at UIL competition

The Pirate band performed at the Region 4 University Interscholastic League (UIL) marching contest on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Mount Pleasant High School. The Pirate band was evaluated on both music and marching on a rating system of One through Five, with “One” being the best a First Division rating and “Five” being the worst. All three judges at the marching contest awarded the Pirate Band a First Division rating, classified as “Superior” by UIL. This is the third year in a row the Pirate band has brought home a first division award from the UIL Marching contest.

Transportation Secretary Holly Chapa was honored by PISD School Board

When the recent bus accident occurred Thursday, Oct. 17, Ms. Chapa, who is new to her job as the Transportation Secretary, reacted with cool professionalism. Her actions were highlighted by Superintendent of Pittsburg ISD, Mrs. Judy Pollan. “She made calls to the people she needed to call, to make sure the principals knew about it, and she texted the parents of the students on the bus,” Mrs. Pollan said. “She just went above and beyond the call of duty.”

Coach Chris Styles honored by Pittsburg School Board

Coach Chris Styles was awarded a photo of the children that ride his bus number 10 every day as a tribute to his cool and resourceful actions after the recent accident that occurred Thursday, Oct. 17. The accident was on his route on US 271, the bus was struck from behind by a pickup going 60 miles an hour, as reported by DPS. Coach Styles’ concern and cool actions were highlighted by Superintendent of Pittsburg ISD, Mrs. Judy Pollan. “When everyone heard it was Coach Styles’ bus, everyone relaxed because they knew he was doing, exactly what he was supposed to do,” Mrs. Pollan said. “I am here to tell you, Chris is a hero.”

Shawn and Amy Kennington announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Payton McKenna Kennington, to Dillon Bryant Richardson at 10 a.m., Nov. 25, at Greer Blvd. church of Christ in Pittsburg.

The bride-elect is a 2016 graduate of Pittsburg High School and is attending Northeast Texas Community College and then Texas A&M Texarkana as an education major. She works at First Kids Academy in Pittsburg.
