NTCC honors students enjoy cultural trip

Northeast Texas Community College honors students recently returned from a cultural trip to the DFW metroplex. The group toured the Heard Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney, shopped in Frisco, saw one of Texas’ largest pipe organs at Stonebriar Community Church and attended an Allen Americans hockey game. The trip was sponsored by Drs. Jim and Paula Archer and other friends of Honors Northeast. The group is pictured above.

Pittsburg High School students advance to Area

Pittsburg High School students competed in the Region Band Auditions for the 2018 Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Region 4 All-Region Band.

Twelve PISD students were selected for the All-Region Band: A’niya Davis, Elizabeth Puckett, Nikki Priddy, Katlyn Holmes, Melanie Torres, Nayelly Enriquez, Zoe Osthoff, Ivan Becerril, Angel Ortiz, Kaleb Fitch, and Yahir Avila and Sabrina Attaway.

Local youth wins calf scramble at the Fort Worth Stock Show

FORT WORTH, TEXAS, January 27, 2018 - Bradon Wilkes, a member of Pittsburg FFA, caught a calf during Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Calf Scramble, earning a $500 purchase certificate for a show heifer and the chance for up to $12,500 in scholarship awards. Wilkes’s parents are Brandon Wilkes and Deanna Martin. Wilkes’s award was sponsored by Lucchese Boot Co.

During 28 rodeo performances the Calf Scramble gives 16 Texas 4-H and FFA members, the opportunity to catch 8 calves, in one of the most thrilling and unpredictable events. Justin Boots and Texas Mutual Insurance Company are long time supporters of the Calf Scramble. Participants who do not catch a calf receive a pair of Justin Boots.

Students visit Dallas museum

Calling it a “very educational and moving tour,” Pittsburg High School dual credit and advanced placement (AP) juniors and seniors visited the Holocaust Museum in Dallas. Elizabeth Lawton, one of the sponsors of the event, said the group heard from Holocaust survivor Bert Romberg, who was on the Kinder transport

School bus safety is everyone’s responsibility

During the December School Board meeting Kenneth Shelton the new Director of Transportation reported to the Pittsburg Independent School District (PISD) Board that:

“The bus drivers are reporting that ‘lots’ of people are running the bus stop signs,” Shelton said.

When he said this the entire room seemed to take notice. What is he talking about? He’s talking about drivers blowing passed school buses loading or unloading our counties children. That stop sign these drivers’ are running is the one on the left side of the bus that folds out, besides the flashing strobe and red blinking lights, there is no excuse for passing a stopped bus. Sooner or later this could end in a tragedy.

Rotarians work annual food drive

Pittsburg Rotarians and the Rotary Interact Club, in conjunction with Brookshire’s, worked the annual food drive for the needy. Those Rotarians stopping for a picture were (from the left): Chris Lummus, Kay Green, Carolyn Franks and Rachel Miner. Food baskets were delivered to needy families the last Wednesday before Christmas.
