USPS Food Drive

The employees of the United States Post Office (USPS) annual food drive was an enormous success. All the food collected was donated by the good citizens of Pittsburg. All food was donated to God’s Closet in downtown Pittsburg. NTCC announces winners of annual McGraw-Hill Poster Contest

Northeast Texas Community College hosted its 10th annual McGraw-Hill Poster Content April 27 in the Whatley Center for the Performing

Arts. Sponsored by McGraw-Hill Education, a Whatley Enhancement Grant and Jerald and Mary Lou Mowery, the event allows students to present research on a topic of their choice to a panel of local judges. Matthew Chambers, a Presidential Scholar from Mount Pleasant, took first place at the competition to win $400 plus McGraw-Hill textbook coupons for $175.

He presented his work on the Dallas elite, which was also presented recently at the Great Plains Honors Council.

Cooke National Scholarship Winners

Alicia Cantrell and Brenda Godoy, students at Northeast Texas Community College, are two of just 47 recipients of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s prestigious Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. This highly competitive national scholarship will provide these two local recipients with up to $40,000 annually for a maximum of three years to complete their bachelor’s degrees.

Honor Society induction

The Northeast Texas Community College Associate Degree Nursing program recently inducted 32 students into its Gamma Omicron Chapter of the Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society. Alpha Delta Nu recognizes the academic excellence of students in the study of Associate Degree Nursing. The selective society requires that students have at least a 3.0 GPA in nursing classes and be recommended by faculty.

NTCC students named Hites Scholars

Northeast Texas Community College students Chesney Davis and Brenda Godoy are among ten college students named 2018 Hites Scholars. Each will receive a $7,500 scholarship for their baccalaureate studies. This is the largest scholarship Phi Theta Kappa awards to its members.

Winners were selected from among 3,100 applicants nationwide. The Hites Transfer Scholarship Program is made possible by support from the Hites Family Foundation and the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. Davis is a future mechanical engineer, while Godoy will pursue a career as a pediatrician

Pirate Band scores high in region

The Pittsburg High School Concert and Symphonic bands competed at the Region-4 University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight Reading contests on April 18.

The Pittsburg High School Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Jonathan Stafford, received an “Excellent” rating in both their stage and sight reading adjudication, the highest ratings the PHS Concert band has ever received.

NTCC establishes memorial scholarship

The Preston Currey Family of Hughes Springs recently donated $10,000 to establish the Joyce Ellison Currey Memorial Scholarship at Northeast Texas Community College. The perpetual scholarship will be used to provide financial assistance to students majoring in nursing at NTCC. Joyce Ellison Currey was a nurse at Titus Regional Medical Center for decades and spent her career caring for patients and mentoring the next generation of nurses.
