NTCC students receives top national scholarships

Brenda Godoy, a student at Northeast Texas Community College, has received two of the nation’s top academic scholarships.

Godoy is one of 20 students to be named to the All‐USA Academic Team and will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The All‐USA program is widely recognized as the most prestigious academic honor for students attending associate degree-granting institutions. All‐USA Academic Team members were selected for their outstanding intellectual achievement, leadership, and community and campus engagement.

NTCC named national ‘Tree Campus’

Northeast Texas Community College recently received the Tree Campus USA Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

The Tree Campus USA program recognizes colleges and universities that maintain and promote healthy trees on campus and teach the importance of trees to the environment. The colleges develop a tree care plan, participate in student service tree projects and observe Abor Day.

Daniel and Miller to perform at NTCC

Guitarist Andrew Daniel and violinist Mark Miller will perform Songs and Dances of the Americas Sunday, April 15 at 2:30 p.m. at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit music scholarships. The program includes History of the Tango by Piazzolla and Mountain Songs by Robert Beaser. Also, on the program are solo guitar works by Leo Brouwer and Brian Head.

New Pizza Inn ownership comes full circle

Nathan Crouch is the new owner of the Pizza Inn franchise in Pittsburg, the company announced recently. Crouch’s purchase of the restaurant on North Greer Blvd. brings him back to a community that has special significance for his family.

The location was originally built and opened by his father, Joe Crouch, who got started in the pizza business in the mid-1990s when he bought the Pizza Inn location in Sulphur Springs.

“When he got that going well, he built this location. He purchased the raw land and built the building in 1998, so this location was our second franchise,” said Crouch, who helped his father open the restaurant back then while he was in college at Texas Tech.

Guaranty Bank & Trust named Best Company to Work For

Guaranty Bank & Trust was recently named as one of the 2018 Best Companies to Work for in Texas. The bank earned a spot in the Top 100 list for the ninth consecutive year, ranking 5th in the medium-sized company category.

The awards program was created in 2006 as a project of Texas Monthly magazine, the Texas Association of Business (TAB), Texas Society for Human Resource Management and Best Companies Group.

Rachel Miner, president of GBT’s Pittsburg branch, said not only did the company rank fifth, it was the highest- ranking bank in their category.

NTCC nurses host brunch

The Department of Nursing at Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) hosted a brunch in the NTCC Culinary School’s facility in downtown Pittsburg, Friday March 03. The NTCC Department of Nursing meets each year with a cross-section of clinical partners to discuss how to best prepare our nursing students for employment in professional roles.

The Nursing Advisory Committee guide and steer the program to ensure the education meets the demands of the professional practice. Those clinical partners are the hospitals, clinics, and facilities were our students experience part of the nursing training as well as employment opportunities after graduation

PHS student earns national DECA honor

Daisy Portillo, a senior at Pittsburg High School is the recipient of the 2018 DECA Emerging Leader Honor Award. Miss Portillo is the daughter of Isela Briseno of Pittsburg. This award recognizes students studying in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management for being an academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, and an experienced leader through participation in DECA. The award recipient must be a DECA member in their senior year of high school with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better for each of the high school semesters.

Pittsburg FFA places third in Houston show

The Pittsburg FFA show team did Camp County at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. They placed third for “Herdsman” out of 254 counties across the state of Texas. The Herdsman award is a given by a committee that makes inspections to determine the winners. The following details were considered: Orderliness and cleanliness of quarters, stalls, and animals. Promptness in having stalls or pens cleaned early each day. To be eligible, the name of the exhibit must be clearly posted as the animals are stalled.

 

Systematic and neat arrangement of traps, feed and forage, and keeping same out of the aisles. Personal appearance of the herdsmen and their helpers. Judges considered: Observance of all rules and regulations; must show at least one animal in the arena and cooperation with show officials; cooperating with other exhibitors and demonstrating an attitude of good sportsmanship in general.
