Pittsburg man indicted on meth charges

A Pittsburg man is facing charges of distribution of narcotics.

A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Texas indicted Melvin Anthony Smith, 54, and four others for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine. According to the indictment, which was filed May 16 and unsealed July 5, Smith, Stinson Lesley, Wesley Haley, Norman Spruiell and Laura Pace allegedly distributed at least 50 grams of methamphetamine.

Smith’s arrest warrant remained sealed as of Monday.

Makenzi Edwards named 2018 Peach Queen

After six weeks of selling tickets to Pioneer Days events and hosting community fundraisers, Makenzi Edwards emerged as the winner of the 2018 Peach Queen contest.

The Pittsburg-Camp County Chamber announced the results on Friday, July 6.

The candidate, sponsored by the Pittsburg Lion’s Club, raised the most funds – the Chamber does not release individual amounts – to help bring in a total of $28,645 for this fall’s Pioneer Days festival.

State Park campsites to close for summer

Anvil Brewing owners building live music culture in Pittsburg

Byron and Kristin Aldredge met in Central Texas back when he was a Texas state trooper, and he spent his off-duty hours soaking up the live music scene there. When they moved to Jefferson to buy The Steamboat Inn Bed & Breakfast, they also brought their love of live music with them and opened the Cork Yard, a wine bar, bistro, and music venue. They have since sold the Cork Yard to launch their newest venture Anvil Brewing in Pittsburg, which celebrates its one-year anniversary July 4.

Anvil Brewing and the Pittsburg Feed & Seed Dance Hall, housed in the original Pilgrim’s Pride feed store is the beginning of the couple’s multi-faceted vision to establish Pittsburg as a live music destination.

PISD Board hears gymnasium update

The Pittsburg Independent School District school board received an update on the progress of the new competition gym at its June 18 monthly meeting. Charlie Price of Compass Builders reported to the board that although there have been delays, the project is continuing, and the delays are being addressed. Price said the metal building’s framework is up and the parts of the frame that will be exposed have been painted. Other miscellaneous steel has been delivered and materials for the plumbing, electrical, and fire sprinkler system have arrived on site and installation has begun. Price said that roof panels will be delivered June 22 and installed along with insulation. The HVAC platform will be erected along with other steel members and the fire suppression system should be completed within the next four weeks. He also reported that construction of the new Rusk Street pick-up and drop off lanes and parking lot has begun at Pittsburg Elementary School.

Pittsburg’s historic homes will be the centerpiece of a new Christmas event this year. The City of Pittsburg announced this week that planning for the “Pittsburg by Candlelight” holiday event is underway.

Pittsburg firefighters assist in Midway fire

Two units from the Pittsburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire near Midway on Monday. Fire Chief Carl Cravey said the exact location and in which county was not determined until the Pittsburg units arrived. Units from Gilmer, Bettie, and Ewell arrived soon after. One of the Pittsburg units returned to base as unneeded.

Gilmer Fire Chief Jerry Taylor said the fire was toned out at 2:53 p.m. at 9374 Highway 271 North, a quarter mile north of the Midway Truck Stop.

City to donate firetruck to Thunderbird VFD

Camp County’s Thunderbird Point Volunteer Fire Department will soon add another truck to its line of vehicles thanks to the City of Pittsburg.

The City Council voted in its June 11 meeting to remove the inactive 1990 Ford Fire Truck – known as Booster 1 – from the city fleet so it can be repurposed and put back into service in the county.
