Splash Pittsburg to open this weekend

Splash Pittsburg opens for the season this weekend. The City of Pittsburg announced this week that the splash pad would be open on weekends starting Saturday with fulltime summer hours starting May 28. Splash Pittsburg is in Fair Park at 300 North Texas Street across from Pittsburg High School.

 

The park will be open on weekends May 19-20 and May 26-27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, May 28 the splash park will also open on weekdays Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City Council votes to takes back hospital property

The old hospital property on the west side of Pittsburg off Highway 11 is back in the hands of the City of Pittsburg. Pittsburg City Council members voted in April to accept the old hospital property back from the Pittsburg Economic Development Corporation.

County to rehab courthouse with THC grant funds

Camp County officials learned last week that the Texas Historical Commission had selected Camp County’s grant application for courthouse preservation projects.

The THC announced that 15 Texas counties had been awarded matching grants in Round X of the nationally- recognized Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP) during its quarterly meeting April 27 in San Felipe. The grants were made possible through a $20.2 million appropriation by the 85th Texas Legislature.

About 30 people, including six local pastors, turned out Thursday, May 3 for the National Day of Prayer event at God’s Closet in downtown Pittsburg.

Pittsburg Rodeo kicks off 57th year

Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls and their fans will converge on Pittsburg this week as the gates and chutes open on the 57th Annual Pittsburg Rodeo.

The rodeo will be held Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with the Handicapable Rodeo on Friday morning and free admission on Friday night.

Pittsburg Fire Department fundraiser a success

The Pittsburg community came through in a big way in support of the Pittsburg Fire Department at Saturday’s fire equipment fundraiser. Fire Chief Carl Cravey reported that the May 28 event raised more than $9,500.

That’s puts a dent in the $35,000 the department needs to purchase battery-powered “Jaws of Life” extrication equipment that would replace the hydraulic system that has been used since the early 1990s. “This new battery-operated tool will greatly increase our productivity in saving lives or property.

This will give us the ability to do extractions quicker and possibly save a life,” Cravey told the Gazette in April

Camp County animals test positive for rabies

Two animals have tested positive for rabies in Pittsburg/Camp County within the past 30 days.

According to City of Pittsburg officials, one was a dog and the second was a skunk that was seen fighting with a dog. In both cases, the dogs had not been vaccinated for rabies as required by State statute, officials said in a press release.

PISD Competition gym construction on schedule

The Pittsburg ISD School Board received a construction update on the new competition gym at the board’s April meeting on Monday, April 16.

Charlie Price, the district’s construction engineer, reported that due to several days of mild weather and a clear forecast for the near future, concrete is being poured and the steel building materials have been fabricated and should arrive by April 30.

CASA volunteers crucial in curbing child abuse, neglect

CASA of Titus, Camp, and Morris Counties has been taking part in April’s National Child Abuse Prevention Month by decorating the courthouse lawns in each county with blue pinwheels, recruiting new volunteers, and drawing awareness through social media.
