Memorial Day remembrance planned

By LYNDA STRINGER

Memorial Day promises a three-day weekend of backyard barbecues and lake outings, but while you’re stoking the coals and building campfires, take time to remember those who paid the price for that freedom.

“In today’s society, probably 70 percent of people think that Memorial Day is just the beginning of summer vacation and they don’t realize what veterans have sacrificed for them to go out and be able to drink a beer and drive a boat at the lake,” said Camp County Veteran Service Officer Philip Jones. “My degree is in history and I’m a firm believer that those who don’t study and understand their history are doomed to repeat it.”

Art & Wine Festival to uncork fun

By LYNDA STRINGER

This year’s Pittsburg Art & Wine festival will deliver more of what people love about the Main Street event: artisans, Texas wineries, food, and music. The event will be held Saturday, May 26, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It’s the sixth year for the festival organized by the City of Pittsburg and Pittsburg Main Street and its second year to be held at the city’s newest gathering spot.

The first year, Main Street hosted the fledgling event at Compress Alley downtown with 15 vendors, including five wineries. It moved over to Pendergrass Park for three years and then to the larger and more visible Pilgrim Plaza Park on the east end of Pittsburg’s Main Street adjacent to the Prayer Tower. “We have outgrown the previous locations, and that means it’s a healthy event,” said City Manager Clint Hardeman. “It continues to have success and grow not only from a vendor standpoint but an attendance standpoint.”

By LYNDA STRINGER

As they put the finishing touches on their final days of high school, the Class of 2018 at Pittsburg High School took a few moments to reflect on some of their most memorable moments. This week they are wrapping up finals, making sure they mailed all their graduation invitations and making plans for their futures whether the next step is college, trade school, or hanging up their backpacks for good and heading into the workforce.

There’s excitement in the air as well as that bittersweet undercurrent of sadness that it is all coming to an end. The seniors will be saying goodbyes to friends, teachers, and family as they head out into the world of adulting. But, the memories they’ve made will stay with them forever.
