Texas Rust Rally

The 1st Annual Texas Rust Rally held at Anvil Brewing in downtown Pittsburg featured “Rat Rod” vehicles as well as classic cars and trucks. The event drew people from all over the area, including Dallas and Shreveport, Louisiana for the car show, mini bike races, a 1940s-1950s Pinup Girl Contest, food and live music.

Commissioners Court awards bank bid

In the weekly meeting of the Camp County Commissioners Court, the court considered approval of the tax-exempt financing proposals for the upgrade to the county buildings HVAC and electrical systems. There were two bids on the table, one from Guaranty Bank and the other from Pilgrim Bank, both of Pittsburg.

Law enforcement agencies warn of hot car dangers

A recent warning by the Texas Department of Public Safety on the dangers of leaving children in hot vehicles hits close to home as Pittsburg has already had an incident occur this summer.

Pittsburg Police Chief Richard Penn said in a press release issued Monday, “On May 23, PPD officers responded to a child endangerment call. The investigation revealed that an infant child had been left in a car approximately three hours after a parent arrived at work.”

Founder of Cavender’s boot empire dies at age 87

The official announcement from the Cavender’s company of the May 29 death of its founder is titled “A Celebration of Life of Texas Classic James R. Cavender.”

The fitting headline echoes the sentiments this past week of all who knew him. There was a great sadness for the loss of a patriarch and iconic businessman whose empire began in Pittsburg more than a half-century ago. But, there was also joy and some laughter in remembering and celebrating the life of a man who touched so many.

Top of the class: Colin Brown

Pittsburg Junior High Principal Kristane Moore presents a commemorative plaque to Colin Brown, the son of Daniel and LeaAnn Brown, who achieved the top grade in the PJHS eighth grade class of 193 students. Brown’s final grade point average for the 2017 – 2018 school year was 105.5 percent.

Commissioners Court commends jail staff

The Camp County Jail recently passed a surprise inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS).

The state agency, created in 1975 and headquartered in Austin, oversees county jails to ensure construction and operation standards. The inspection is an annual event, but the inspector arrives unannounced. To pass inspection, the jail must follow Texas Minimum Jail Standards in the Texas Administrative Code, Title 37, Part 9.

Hats off to the graduates

After the tassels were turned, the Pittsburg High School Class of 2018 cut loose on the Pirate football stadium to give their last farewells. Members of the Class of 2018 received their diplomas Friday night. See Page 10 for more scenes from graduation.
