Pirates defeat Bears 21-28

By ELLIS KNOX

I can’t say enough praise for the Pirate offensive-line (O-line), these young men never get enough recognition for what they do in the trenches. The comparison was so stark against the Gladewater Bears, as their linemen kind of stood around after the play moved away from them. In contrast, Pirate linemen led or chased the play. They never stop blocking. Quarterback (QB) Jaylon Jimmerson’s touchdown (TD) from a broken play was engineered by key blocks by the O-line.

Running Back Jordan Turner’s 45 yard race to the end zone was enabled by the Pirate O-line by the big hole in the Bear defensive line and good downfield blocking in the Bear’s secondary as Turner sprinted away from the safeties to score his second TD of the night. The second half was all Pittsburg‘s as the Pirate defense shut down the Bears’ offense to zero. The second half was a change and a different story from the first.

Pittsburg and Gilmer tied for second in 4A District 7

By ELLIS KNOX

With Pittsburg’s loss to the Pleasant Grove Hawks, 28 to 10, the loss by Gladewater to Atlanta 34 to 16, now puts the Pirates and Buckeyes tied for second and Atlanta and Gladewater tied for third. Pleasant Grove is in undisputed first place with an overall record of 6-0 and 3-0 in district.

Pleasant Grove is matched up with Spring Hill next week and it is not beyond possibility that Spring Hill could defeat the Hawks. Spring Hill has lost to Gladewater first by three points, 38 to 35, to Pittsburg by one point 57-56 and then to Gilmer by only two points, 44 to 42. They are due a win. This week will be the most interesting week of them all up to this point.

Pirates win in overtime, 57-56

By ELLIS KNOX

This game between the Spring Hill Panthers and the Pirates was a real nail-biter. The lead changed hands nine times! It all came down to one play in over-time. At the end of regular time the score was tied 49-49. A good defensive play by a Spring Hill safety intercepted a Jimmerson pass and sealed the end of regular play.

The game was tied six times. It looked good for the Pirates as the teams went to the half with Pitt leading 28-21. However, the Panthers tied it up soon after the second half began, 28 to 28. Then it was 35 to 35, and then 49 to 49. Then there was confusion about the game time as the Spring Hill scoreboard froze for the second time in the game.

The Pirates skin the Rabbits

By ELLIS KNOX

What a game! The Pirates played an excellent game against the Atlanta Rabbits. The Rabbits drove down after receiving the first kick-off and scored first, and led 7-0 with less than eight minutes to go in the first quarter.

Pitt came right back and tied the game seven all with three minutes to go in the first quarter on Quarterback Jaylon Jimmerson’s 33 yard pass to waiting hands of junior wide receiver Keontae Burns, in spite of the defender. The Pirate defense solidified and that was the end of any Atlanta offensive challenge in the first half.

Pirates now two and two

By ELLIS KNOX

With one non-district game left before the season break and district play starts the Pirates are now two and two as the Pirates fall to Paris last Friday night in their homecoming game. From the sidelines it appeared the team just did not focus in the first half and lost that part of the game 28 to 0.

The Pirates have always been a second quarter team, but they did not gather themselves until the middle of the third when everything suddenly began to click. The team outscored the Wildcats 20 to 10, but that first half loss just could not be overcome.

At least there was one bright spot last weekend, number one Carthage beat number two Gilmer, 48 to 28.

Sometimes a loss in front of the home crowd is a good thing. There could have been a lot of reason for that loss of focus on a homecoming week, but that doesn’t matter if they get back into the groove.
