“Casey at The Bat” written in 1888 by Ernest Thayer certainly describes the mood in Pittsburg, Friday night, March 23 at Big Green Stadium and the Lady Pirates’ field, “but there is no joy in Mudville…” - nor in Pittsburg. The Pleasant Grove Lady Hawks softball team and the Hawks baseball team arrived in town to play both Pittsburg teams. The Lady Pirates fell to the Lady Hawks by one point and the Pirates lost by two.

The Lady Pirates defeated the Atlanta Lady Rabbits 7-4, in a 4A Region 2, District 14 outing. Besides Atlanta, district opponents include Paris, Pleasant Grove, Liberty-Eylau, and North Lamar. This game puts the Lady Pirates at 2-0 in district. Trinity Aycock got the win and Sydney Reynolds got the save in relief. Aycock, and Taylor Bullock both homered, diving in one run and three runs respectively. Abby Hammonds had two RBIs, Tori Henderson had one to finish out the seven runs.

Pirate Soccer is undefeated in 4A Region 2, District 13 Soccer standings. The Pirates have sailed into their fourth District Championship in a row. The Pirates played their last home game, last district game and their last game of the regular season against the Pleasant Grove Hawks and defeated the Hawks 4-3. This game was the Hawks game to win, to tie for District or defeat the Pirates by at least two goals and win the district. The game see-sawed back and forth mainly in the last minutes of the second period.

The teams went into half time tied 1-1. When the second period began the Hawks went ahead by one goal. The Pirates soon tied it up again. They went ahead by one, as Marco Trejo scored and the clock ticked down. The Hawks came back and tied the score at three each and with 3:28 left in the period, the Pirate Eric Ponce scored and the Pirates went ahead 4-3.

Sydney Waldrep, a senior, was selected Girls’ Second-Team All-District for the 2018 season. She is the daughter of Ann and Terry Waldrep of Pittsburg.

Pirate strong-side offensive lineman Wyatt Logan will play in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ ‘Heart of a Champion Football All-Stars Victory Bowl.’

Wyatt was a utility player for the Pirates, playing fullback for two years before moving to a lineman position this year. He will be playing on the Red Team, Saturday, June 9, at Lobo Stadium, Longview.
