Pirates win two, lose two at Leonard Holiday Tourney

The Pirates saw a lot of basketball action over the Christmas holiday as they played Beckville Dec. 20 before going 2-2 in the Leonard Holiday Tournament over the weekend.
The first quarter was the difference Dec. 20 as the Pirates picked up a 73-56 win over Beckville. Pittsburg jumped out to a 25-8 lead after eight minutes of play and never trailed as they downed the Bearcats by 17.
D.J. Porter and Ty Smith led the way for the Pirates with 12 points each in the win while Sir Charles Perkins and Justin Zepeda were also in double figures with 10. Robert Hollins and Levi Leonard each scored eight,  Markevious Traylor had seven and Jakevion Traylor added six points.
The Pirates came up just short in their first game at Leonard Thursday as they fell to Anno, 47-43. Down 32-21 heading in to the fourth quarter, the Pirates made a comeback in the fourth but fell just short.
“We needed to hit shots from the outside and we just couldn’t do it,” head coach J.B. Littlejohn said. “It was a winnable game, we just came up a little short.”
Perkins led the way in the loss with 12 points while D.J. Hughes added 11, Markevious Traylor scored nine, Leonard had four and Jakevion Traylor, Hollins, Zepeda and Smith all scored two.
The Pirates bounced back with a win in their second game of the tournament Friday as they used a strong second quarter to get past Pottsboro, 53-46.
With the game tied at eight after one quarter, Pittsburg outscored the Cardinals 24-14 in the second frame and never looked back on the way to the win.
Hill led the way with 15 points while Markevious Traylor had 12 and Perkins was also in double figures with 11. Jakevion Traylor added five points, Leonard had four and Hughes, Hollins and Zepeda each scored two.
A huge fourth quarter by the Pirates was the difference late Friday as Pittsburg picked up a 48-32 win over Texoma Christian.
