Boy Scout Judah Byars earns Eagle rank

By DAVID WALL Contributor to The Pittsburg Gazette

Judah Byars, a Mount Pleasant Troop 101 scout, is currently working on his service project, which is to provide six raised bed gardens that are wheelchair accessible. All of the gardens will be presented to the Pittsburg Nursing Center in Pittsburg. A prototype has been completed and was shown recently to the residents at the nursing center. e raised bed gardens will allow residents to have gardens regardless of handicaps that might prevent working in a regular garden. The Eagle rank is the pinnacle of success in scouting. Most youngsters who join may believe they will make it to that coveted rank, unfortunately, the reality of how hard it is to attain that rank stops most individuals a er three to four years of trying. Only one or two individuals per 100 scouts attain the rank of Eagle Scout.

Famous Texans: The Longhorns (Part 1)

No, not those Longhorns, the real longhorns of Spanish ancestry. Spanish colonists who followed the conquistadores into the new world brought the longhorn cattle with them. ey were introduced into California, Florida, and Texas. Of course, the horns give it its distinctive name. is breed has been known to have horns up to seven feet, tip to tip. Longhorns have no particular color as they seem to be any and every color and scheme on a background of white. The Texas longhorns were released or escaped from the Spanish settlers, and a huge herd of feral longhorns bred practically unmolested for two centuries in the Texas grasslands. The Anglo settlers of Texas began to round up and herd the animals for their own consumption. The Longhorns in California and Florida seemed to just disappear. However, at that time there was no market for them or a way to transport them. So the Texas herd just grew and grew.

Old age is going to get the best of me, or my driving

Old age is just killing me but the problem is – I still like to think of myself as young and an excellent driver. I just got back from the mid-winter Texas Press Convention in San Marcos and that’s a long way to drive for a 61-year-old woman by herself who doesn’t see as well as she used to. I tell the sta , don’t text me because I’m not going to read it and I’m not that interested in knowing what a text says while I’m driving. And I can’t gure out how to get my texts singled out from my Facebook posts so my phone is dinging all the time. I decided at the last minute to travel to Austin Wednesday a ernoon, but I needed to get there by dark because I don’t see well at night. I had a budget meeting with one of my bossesWednesday morning who was kind enough to let me go ahead and get the heck out of town. I dashed out the door at 12:06 from the o ce, went home; threw my stu in the car and completely skipped Rotary. And then I found out I was scheduled to have the program at Rotary.
