Bridge club meets

The Pittsburg Duplicate Bridge Club met at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 525 Elm Street. Winners from the Jan. 12 match were north/south: Janie and Jerrell Wolaver with 57.50 percent, Cli Smith and Helen Sullivan with 57.50 percent, Sandy Lansing and Linda Harrison with 53.75 percent, and Denny and Rita Forest with 46.67 percent.

Marketing options for cattle discussed at Blackland Income Growth Conference

From traditional livestock auctions to online sources, cattle producers have a variety of options to choose from when marketing cattle, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service beef cattle specialist. Dr. Jason Banta, beef cattle specialist at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Overton, gave a broad overview of marketing options at the recent Blackland Income Growth Conference in Waco. Banta said the biggest impact on income in a cattle operation is percentage of calves weaned. Other pieces of the equation include how many pounds the calves weigh and price received per pound. “Condition of cows at calving time has the biggest impact on pregnancy rates,” Banta said. “You want those cows to be at a body condition score of ve or better.” Genetics also play an important role as well as input costs. Cull cows and cull bulls account for 10 to 15 percent of producers’ income.

‘Wolf moon’ rises next weekend

The moon reaches full status the night of Jan. 23-24, to astronomers, full moon represents a well-de ned instant: when the moon resides 180 degrees opposite the sun in ecliptic longitude. Watch for the full-looking moon to light up the nighttime nearly all night long from Jan. 23-26, as it shines in the east at early evening, climbs highest up for the night around midnight and sits low in the west at the break of dawn.

City honors Intermediate School with proclamation

Mayor Shawn Kennington of the City of Pittsburg congratulates the administration of Pittsburg Intermediate and Pittsburg Independent School District for their nomination of the Blue Ribbon Award. Mayor Kennington presented Pittsburg Intermediate School Principal Sarah Richmond with a proclamation for the schools outstanding achievement in academics.

Local actress snags part in Unwanted film

Second Hand Productions announced Wynter Fielder, the daughter of Robert and Carla Peoples, as being cast in their film. Miss Fielder is also an accomplished author as she writes a daily comic strip on the internet, on Fan Fiction. She also attends the Culinary School at Northeast Texas Community College. The film will be shot at the historic Holman House on Texas Street. Addtional auditions will be held in Longview. “I am excited to announce that Wynter will be joining the cast of Unwanted.

The Pittsburg Police Department is investigating a residential fire that occurred at 328 Mount Pleasant Street on Dec. 25, 2015. The fire has been ruled as an arson and is currently under investigation.
