Pep rally to be held for intermediate school

A Washington D.C. send-off pep rally will be held at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 4 at Pirate Stadium to celebrate Pittsburg Intermediate School staff and students, and for the school being nominated as one of 26 schools in the State of Texas as a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School. The pep rally is a send off for the Pittsburg Intermediate administrators and staff attending the awards ceremony in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, Nov. 8. The Pep Rally will include Pittsburg Intermediate students, Pittsburg Junior High students, both Pirate Bands and cheerleaders, and PISD administrators and school board. The public is invited to attend the celebration. U.S. Secretary of Education, John B. King, Jr., announced Wednesday, Sept. 28 that Pittsburg Intermediate School was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School. Pittsburg Intermediate is one among 279 public and 50 private schools receiving this honor.

School Board approves small project architect

Four small projects at the school district could be completed as early as January, according to Charlie Price, Pittsburg Independent School District’s contract engineer. Mr. Price recommended a semi-retired architect, Charles Lambert, to design the four projects that will be funded by the bond election.

Early voting runs through Nov. 4

Camp County residents can participate in early voting through Nov. 4 for the General Election on Nov. 8. Residents can cast their vote in the basement of the courthouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. There are two ways to vote early: by showing up in person during the prescribed early voting period, as described above or by voting by mail. You may vote early by mail if:

• You will be away from your county on Election Day and during early voting;

• You are sick or disabled; • You are 65 years of age or older on Election Day; or

• You are confined in jail, but eligible to vote. You can get a formal application for a ballot by mail from: The Secretary of State’s office, The County Clerk, or by downloading an application at: www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/forms/pol-sub/5-15f.pdf.

Townsend, French square off locally in Nov. 8 election

Nov. 8 will see a contested race for Camp County Precinct 1 Commissioner between incumbent Bart Townsend and challenger George French, and the election of a new president and vice president, but will also mean the election or reelection of several other federal, state, and local candidates. It goes without saying that the most contested election this cycle is the U.S. Presidential election between the two establishment party candidates and two alternative party candidates: Republican Donald J. Trump, along with running mate Mike Pence; and Democrat Hillary Clinton, whose running mate is Tim Kaine. Gary Johnson, along with William Weld, make up the Libertarian Party candidates; and Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka will represent the Green Party.

Memorial golf tourney raises more than $6,000

On Oct. 1, the 16th annual Susan Hicks Motes Memorial Golf Tournament was held to kick o Breast Cancer Awareness month at Princedale Country Club in Pittsburg. Mrs. Hicks’ parents, Ed and Diana Hicks, were in attendance along with her brother and sister in-law, Mike and Teresa Hicks. The tournament raised money to be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Susan’s name due to donations from local businesses for the silent auction, fun hole advantages for cash, cash sponsorships, and raffles.

National Night Out is a success

The Pittsburg Police Department hosted a citywide “National Night Out” party at Fair Park last Tuesday night from 6 p.m. to 8. e event was designed to promote a positive relationship between community residents and the local emergency services. A wide variety of agencies were present at the event such as: the Pittsburg Police Department, Camp County EMS, the Pittsburg Fire Department, East Texas Medical Center.

Residents are reminded to be aware of Outdoor Burning Ordinance

Cooler weather brings falling leaves and falling leaves means burn piles because, let’s face it, no one wants leaves to just pile up in their yards, on decks, roofs, et cetera. Burning is certainly one way to get rid of those pesky leaves, but residents of Pittsburg be warned: the city does have an Outdoor Burning Ordinance that will have to be followed. The city council also recently amended the ordinance for multiday burning. “ The Council approved a recent amendment to the city’s outdoor burning ordinance. is amendment will allow multiday burning for special circumstances such as land clearing for commercial or residential development and for land that is considered agricultural.

The Pittsburg City Council met on Oct. 3 for a regular meeting at city hall and tackled a number of agenda items and recognized several city staff members for their years of service. Mayor Shawn Kennington presented Felipe Mejia, Jonathan Gage, (who was not able to be present) Richard Penn, Craig Mercer and Chris Ostho with certi cates recognizing their service to the city. Mr. Mejia has been with the city for ve years; Mr. Gage has been with the city for 10 years; Mr. Penn has been with the city 15 years; and Mr. Mercer andMr. Ostho has been with the city for 20 years.
