“Unwanted” premier in January, featuring Pittsburg historic home, to be in Longview

‘Home for the Holidays’ to feature ice skating, open market and more

Events are set for Pittsburg’s inaugural Home for the Holidays celebration that will be held Nov. 25-27 in downtown Pittsburg at several locations.An ice skating rink will be placed between Pilgrim Plaza and the old Pittsburg Post Office each day of the event. The rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27. Pittsburg Intermediate chosen as Grand Marshalfor Christmas parade

• A team of 18 members of Emmanuel Baptist Church left Pittsburg bound for Honduras. The team, led by Rev. Kyle Smith, traveled to Jalaca, Honduras, to minister to the medical and spiritual needs of the children at New Life Children’s Home, run by Mike and Alethea Pearson from Pittsburg.

•  Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. reduces the weekly chicken processing by 5 percent, or approximately 1.3 mil-lion head per week, by January 2007 as part of its continuing effort to better balance supply and de-mand amid declining chicken prices and sharply higher costs for corn.

Winning the battle over cancer

Cancer is the one word no one wants to hear. I have certainly had my fair share of the dreaded “C” word. I lost my mother, father, and sister to one of the many horrific types of cancer. My aunt Heelan Wafford was only 37 when the disease took over her life, and I will never forget the oncologist telling my uncle that “if she can only live five more years, we can cure her.”

Pirate Band marches up to Area competition

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the Pride of Pittsburg Pirates Band competed in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region four marching competition and placed with the highest score achievable, a one. Bands are ranked one through five with a ‘one,’ a first division band, being the highest.
