Pirates’ baseball team wins Texas state title with win over Paris

The Pittsburg Pirates’ 17U summer baseball team steamrolled an overmatched Paris team 12-2 to win the 2013 Dixie Pre-Majors State Championships held at Paris Junior College July 5 through July 10.

Pirate athletic boosters gives nine scholarships

Harrel wins annual parachute bingo contest

Tonette Harrel, left, receives a $1,000 check for her winning ticket in Parachute Bingo. Ms. Harrel participated in the Fourth of July fund-raiser by purchasing 10 tickets, five for herself and five for her mother. Mayor Shawn Kennington hands her the check.

Gibson wins state awards for taxidermied animals

Allen Gibson, the owner of Allen’s Taxidermy, located on Rusk Street, competed and placed in the Texas Taxidermy Association’s annual convention in Killeen on June 27-29.
“It’s my first award since I’ve been back,” Mr. Gibson said. He’s been in the business for 43 years, and he got out about 10 years ago. Just a few years ago, he decided to start again in taxidermy.
Mr. Gibson competed in the professional division, and placed third on a whitetail deer pedestal mount and third place with a life-size Urial sheep.
“It’s an honor, as tough as that competition is,” he said.

Camp County veterans rely on Jones

There are 1,101 veterans in Camp County. Those veterans and their families benefit greatly from Veterans Service Officer Phillip A. Jones’ training and dedication to his job. Mr. Jones, who holds the Veterans Administration’s highest level of certification, is an advocate for fully-developed claims, which he helps veterans and their dependents with on a weekly basis.

Registered sex offender arrested by Sheriff’s Office

Danny Paul Johnson, age 42, of Pittsburg, was arrested July 11 and charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child. The alleged offense occurred sometime in March, 2012, according to Camp County Sheriff Alan McCandless.

Students invade, clean up Camp County in Christ’s name

Linda Reynolds said she is blessed that World Changers came to town.
The Pittsburg resident, who was caring for her grandson at the time, watched the week of June 24 while a roofing crew from World Changers, a Christian volunteer service organization, re-roofed her home and painted it.

Clint “Cowboy” Williams

Services for Clint “Cowboy” Williams, 43, of Pittsburg, were held on July 8 at Erman Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Doyle Rust officiating. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Williams was born May 5, 1970, in Paris and died July 5 at his home in Pittsburg.

Council hires a new city manager for Pittsburg

Almost two months after holding a special election widening the requirements for city manager, the city council hired Clint Hardeman to replace former city manager Jim Gibson, whose contract was not renewed over two years ago.
