Pirates look to right the ship against Atlanta

By Cory Smith

The Atlanta Rabbits (Rabbs) are off to a hot start under fourth year man, Matt McClure, who hails from the Scott Surratt (Carthage) coaching tree. The Rabbs return three year starter, Chase Musgrove at quarterback, who threw for over 1,400 yards last season. They also return a 1,300 yard rusher in tailback, DeQuan Allen. Defensively, the Rabbs will rely on five returning starters who pose a challenge to any opposing offense. Look for Cameron Schultz, (linebacker) Alvin Battle, (defensive tackle) and Tristan Allen (defensive end ) to be impact players for the Rabbs.

Pirates fall to New Boston 35-20

By Cory Smith

The Pirates were looking to notch their first win of the season last Friday night as they traveled to New Boston to take on the Lions. Pittsburg is still searching for that win, as the Pirates lost to the Lions 35-20.
The first quarter would be a defensive battle with both teams trading blows with one another. The Pirates were able to force New Boston into a fourth down punt thanks to E.J. Hill and Sir Charles Perkins, who hit the Lion ball carrier in the backfield for a two yard loss.

Pirates look to upset Lions

By Cory Smith

The Pirates will be looking to right the ship this week and pull off an upset against 3A powerhouse New Boston. The Lions are under direction of second year head coach, Jamey Thomas, who guided the Lions to a 13 win season last year with a trip to the state semi-finals.
Look for New Boston to rely heavily on their running game, which is anchored by running back, Quinn Dedmon, who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season.

Ron Washington, the only manager to lead the Texas Rangers to the World Series, resigned Friday because of an undisclosed personal matter, Washington and the team announced. "Today, I have submitted my resignation from the job I love – managing the Rangers – in order to devote my full attention to addressing an off-thefield personal matter," Washington said in a statement. "As painful as it is, stepping away from the game is what's best for me and my family." Bench coach Tim Bogar was named interim manager.

Pittsburg vs. Gladewater comes in at #9 on ETSN countdown

By : Mike Graham
Special to the Gazette

Pittsburg isn’t a team getting a lot of love at the state level, but we believe the still somewhat young Pirates are a real threat to contend to the District 7-4A Division I crown with 15 starters returning to the 2014 team from a squad that made the area round of the playoffs last season.
They’re going to get a good test from Gladewater on Sept. 5 at the Bears’ Jack V. Murphy Stadium.
It’s the No. 9 game in ETSN.fm’s top 25 match ups of the 2014 season, and it begins a rough two-game, non-districtstretch for Pittsburg with a trip to New Boston the very next week.

Pirates lose heartbreaker to Pleasant Grove 26-25

By Cory Smith

The Pirates took the field last Friday night for the season opener against Pleasant Grove in a game that would turn out to be a barnburner. Defense was the Pirates specialty, especially in the first quarter as Frezarian Harrison (28) would recover two fumbles, returning one for a touchdown. After Harrison ran in the fumble recovery, the Pirates would covert a two point try by way of Tre Walker (5) which made it 8-0 Pittsburg with 7:40 left in the first.
After giving up an interception, the Pirates got the ball back by recovering another fumble for a touchdown, and kicker, Jose Garcia nailed the extra point to make it 15-0 Pittsburg with 5:21 left in the first.
