Pirates compete in soccer tourney

The Pirates soccer team competed in the Paris Soccer Tournament the weekend of Jan. 14 – 16. The Pirates defeated the North Lamar Panthers 3 points to 0 in this non-league victory on ursday, Jan. 14. Victor Ponce scored one goal and Jose Trejo scored two. Congratulations to Trejo for being selected Maxprep’s Player of the Game. Next, the Pirates faced the Denison Yellow Jackets on Friday, Jan. 15. Pittsburg and Denison went into the second period tied 1 and 1, but the Yellowjackets scored two more goals to win 3-1.

Pirates and Lady Pirates lose district openers

The Lady Pirates played their first district game away at North Lamar High School in Paris Jan. 12. The North Lamar Lady Panthers won Tuesday’s conference game against Pittsburg by a score of 48-35. Sophomore Sydney Reynolds was leading scorer with 13 points, senior Ayanna Palmer scored six. Reynolds hit four, three pointers points and one free throw that account for her 13 points. The Lady Pirates dropped their second district game against Pleasant Grove Friday, Jan. 15 away at Pleasant Gove, by a score of 76 – 60. The Lady Pirates next home game is Jan. 19.

Pirates defeat Chapel Hill 1- 0

The Pittsburg soccer team played an away game in Gladewater, Friday, Jan. 8. The Pirates bottled up the Gladewater Bears during the first six minutes of the game. Senior Victor Ponce and Senior Alexandro Mata, both had goals and with the score 2 to 0. The game was delayed due to lighting in the area. Several minutes later the Gladewater coach came to the Pirate locker room and forfeited the game. The Pirates had outclassed the Bears and dominated play. The Pirates hosted the Chapel Hill Bulldogs at Pirates stadium on a cold Tuesday night, Jan. 12. The Pirate JV lost to the Bulldog JV, 1 to 0.

Lady Pirates split with Brownsboro

The Lady Pirates split wins with the Brownsboro Lady Bears the Lady Freshman won defeating the Bear’s Freshman 24 – 20. e Pirates Varsity lost to the Lady Bears 36 – 59. e Lady JV won a squeaker and the out-come was in doubt until the last minutes of the game. Malaysia Burns and Kimberly Roach were outstanding during the game.

Pirates split two away games

The Pirates won Tuesday, 01/05, against the Jefferson Bulldogs, 76 to 72. Deldric “Red” Shields was high point man with 28 points, Brain Baca scored 15, Dejour Dowell hit 12, while Damien Porter and Rob Hollins each scored 9 points. The Pirates lost Friday, 01/08, against the Clarksville Tigers, 54 to 73. Porter, Baca, and Dowell all scored 11 points and Hollins had 10. The Pirates first district contest is away against the Pleasant Grove Hawks. The 4A Region II District 15 district standings in non-conference play are as follows: Paris 19-2; Atlanta 10-6; Pleasant Grove 9-6; North Lamar 12-9; Liberty-Eylau 4-4; Pittsburg 3-6.

The Lady Pirates lose to Atlanta

The Lady Pirates Varsity lost a heart-breaker Friday, 01/08, in their rst 4A Region II District 15 game against the Atlanta Lady Rabbits. e nal score was not on the score board until 0:00.2 seconds remained in the game. With only 0:10.6 seconds to go in the game an Atlanta player shoots a fall away jumper for three points and is fouled and the clock stops at 0.00.2 seconds. e game had gone back and forth with the lead changing several times but the Lady Pirates always were able to slip ahead. e Lady Rabbits managed to stay close behind.

Whitehouse scrimmage

The Pirate Soccer teams played on a very cold night Tuesday, 01/05, the temperature dropped into the 40’s and the slight breeze did not help much. e fans were bundled up to the max and the players had on shorts. The results of the Whitehouse scrimmage are as follows the Pirate JV were outscored by Whitehouse 4 to 2. e Varsity fared much better defeating the Whitehouse Varsity one to nothing. Alexandro Mata scored the only goal off of Victor Ponce’s assist. The Varsity plays an away game in Gladewater Friday, Jan. 8, game starts at 07:00 P.M. The next Home game will be Tuesday, Jan. 12 against Tyler Chapel Hill. Both JV and Varsity will play. JV game starts at 05:00 P.M. and Varsity at 06:30 P.M.
