Famous Texans: Dwight D. Eisenhower

Many Texans wear the label “soldier and statesman.” However, it fits Dwight D. Eisenhower like…well pick your own metaphor. They all work because of any list of great or famous Texans he has to be in the top five. Dwight Eisenhower was born Oct. 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas. He was the thirty-fourth President of the United States from 1953 till 1961. He was also Supreme Commander of all allied forces in the European theater of war during WWII. Eisenhower was of Pennsylvania Dutch origin. However, the Amish are not from Holland, or the Netherlands, but are actually from Germany. The name “Dutch” was a misunderstanding by the local Americans. When asked where the Amish had come from, they answered, “Deutschland,” which sounded like, Dutch-land, to the American ear. Deutschland is the German name for Germany.
