Meteor shower peaks this week

By ELLIS KNOX reporter@campcountynow.com

The best of the best, often called the king of the meteor showers is in progress for the next several days. As many as 100 to 150 shooting stars will streak across the night sky every hour. The best time to catch a glimpse of one of these meteors is just after sunset looking towards the south, but can be seen all night. Unlike most meteor showers the Geminids are not particles of passing comets such as Halley’s, but are particles from an asteroid the 3200 Phaethon. The asteroid takes about 1.4 years to orbit around the Sun. The asteroid passes through the Earth’s orbit and leaves a trail of debris behind it.
