• Seven community members vie for school board. Sarah Johns and Steve Parker faced off for Place 3. The incumbent, Dr. Dan Kincaid, chose not to seek re-election. Dr. Mary McKinney, the incumbent in Place 4, drew an opponent in Bob Roe. Place 5 featured three candidates, Tim Nicholson and Bobby Richardson are challenged incumbent board member Neal Hinson.

A celebration of black history

Peoples: ‘Turn negatives from past into positives for the future’

Photos & Article by SUSAN TAFT Contributor to The Pittsburg Gazette

Nina Johnson, the woman who started it all, was remembered at the annual Black History Program sponsored by the Museum Association. Mrs. Johnson died last year at the age of 97. The speaker for the Feb. 26 program, Rev. Patrick Lloyd, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, said he is thankful to Mrs. Johnson for starting the program. “She started it at a time when she said not many churches do anything as far as programs relating to Black History,” he said. “Sister Nina felt like more could be done to celebrate Black History and to share those wonderful stories. We’re thankful for the great legacy she leaves behind.” During his message about the history of black churches, Rev. Lloyd said through the many years of struggle and pain, African Americans knew their lives and souls mattered and that God had a place for them.

Pittsburg FFA shine in San Antonio

By ELLIS KNOX reporter@campcountynow.com (Brenda B. Davis contributed to this story)

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo was held the last weekend, and showcased the Junior Agricultural Mechanics Show. Agricultural teacher Willie Morgan and eight FFA students represented the Pirates at the show. There were 574 entries in the show, so the competition was fierce and chances of winning a blue ribbon are slim. Pittsburg FFA were all winners and won blue ribbons. As stated on the show’s website: “ The Junior Agricultural Mechanics Show focuses on Texas 4-H and FFA members’ expertise to design and construct agricultural mechanics projects and tractor restoration projects. A variety of projects are constructed by these talented exhibitors including livestock equipment, trailers, and agricultural machinery. As well, exhibitors may restore tractors that range from early 1900 era models to more modern tractors built in 1990.
