Winnsboro Livestock Commission for April 5 auction

Shannon Davis of the Winnsboro Livestock Commission, reported a total of 787 head of cattle moved through on April 5 at the following prices:
•Baby calves, $25-$350 a head.
•Pairs, $1,050-$2,100 a head.
•Stocker cows $900-$1,550 a head.
•Slaughter cows 60-90 cents a pound.
•Slaughter bulls 88 cents-$1.02 a pound.
•Steers, under 300 pounds, $1.60-$2.85 a pound; 300-400 pounds, $1.50-$2.15 a pound; 400-500 pounds, $1.40-$1.85 a pound; over 500 pounds, $1.15-$1.65 a pound.
•Heifers, under 300 pounds, $1.45-$2.60 a pound; 300-400 pounds, $1.40-$1.80 a pound; 400-500 pounds, $1.30-$1.70 a pound; over 500 pounds, $1.10-$1.50 a pound.

Pittsburg Primary School holds registration April 23

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration for the 2013-2014 school year will be held at Pittsburg Primary School April 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  Students enrolling in pre-kindergarten must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 and students enrolling in kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Sept.1.
Bring your child’s birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records and proof of residence.  The parent or legal guardian enrolling a student in school must bring a driver’s license or a valid photo ID card showing name, address and birth date.

Honor society presented at NTCC board meeting

Northeast Texas Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society accumulated 19 awards recently, as reported to the board of trustees at the March 26 meeting. Dr. Melissa Weinbrenner, advisor for the NTCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, presented a report to the board. Dr. Weinberenner said NTCC’s Alpha Mu Chi Chapter won 19 awards at the 2013 Texas Regional Convention, in addition to one of the members being elected District III vice president. Four students were in attendance at the board meeting. They were Alisha Richardson of Avinger; Noah Griffin and Ashley Hall, both of Pittsburg; and Stephen Milburn of Mount Pleasant.
“This is one of the most active student organizations on the campus,” NTCC President Dr. Brad Johnson said.
In his report, Dr. Johnson discussed security on the campus.

Writers to meet on Thursday at Mount Pleasant library

The Northeast Texas Writers’ Organization will hold its monthly meeting at the Mount Pleasant Public Library on April 11 at 5 p.m.
The group will finalize plans for the upcoming spring writers’ conference.
This year’s “Writers’ Roundup” will be held April 26 through 27 at the Mount Pleasant Civic Center. The faculty will include New York agents Doug Grad and Jill Marr and best-selling authors Molly McAdams, Colleen Hoover and Earl Staggs. The conference will also include publishers and consultants.
 Award-winning San Antonio writer and police sergeant Joe McKinney will also present “A Primer on Police Procedure” for aspiring crime writers. Writers will have opportunities to attend seminars, workshops and one-on-one meetings with several of the presenters.

Camp County Jail Log from April 2 through April 5

The Camp County Sheriff’s Office reports the following activities:
Charles Evan Garner was arrested by the Sheriff’s Office April 2 for assault by threat.
Jonathon Lee Anderson was arrested on April 3 by the Sheriff’s Office. He is being held for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Mary Kough Chacon was arrested by the Police Department for theft of property, more than $1,500.
Erica Paulette Jones was arrested by the Police Department that same day for forgery.
Chasity Richardson was arrested by the Sheriff’s Office April 5. She is being held for Hopkins County.
The Sheriff’s Office arrested Rubini Teivory Wilson April 5 for assault with bodily injury and on two probation violations.
Kevin Daniel Woods was arrested by the Sheriff’s Office on April 5 for release of surety.

Pittsburg resident receives Caldwell Award for history essay

At the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) conference in Fort Worth, Northeast Texas Community College honors student Noah Griffin won first place in the Caldwell Award competition for the best essay in Texas History.
Mr. Griffin received a $400 award for the honor, topping all peers in the college/university, freshman/sophomore level. Steve Cure, the director for educational services of the TSHA, who presented Mr. Griffin with the award, remarked that there was an especially crowded field of entries this year.
Mr. Griffin is the son of Joy and Dr. Stephen Griffin from Pittsburg. He is the brother of Isaac Griffin, who also achieved many honors while a student at NTCC.

John M. Holman is honored at the Texas Association of Museums annual meeting with the Jo Stewart Randel Outstanding Trustee Award.
The stained glass windows at St. Beulah C.M.E. Church were repaired with grant money from the Texas Historical Society and the city of Pittsburg.
The Pittsburg Pirate baseball team beat District leader, Jefferson Bulldogs, 9-7.

Middle school students advance to the state history fair. They are Daniel Brown, Jason Setty, Benji King, Rebekah Neves, Monica Causey and Autumn Moore.
Eighth grade track team finishes first in district. The seventh grade girls take second place.
30 YEARS AGO
Mary McKinney, James B. Hardaway and Robert Rogers win seats in school trustee election.
Man found in the trunk of a car appears to be the victim of a gunshot wound. The body was found near Hepsibah Cemetery.

Ideas to promote Camp County tourism will be shared on April 16

A luncheon meeting to discuss tourism ideas and activities for Pittsburg and Camp County is set for April 16. The meeting will be held at the Hanson-Sewell Center on College Street from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
“The meeting is being held to gain ideas, perspectives and suggestions on how best to promote Pittsburg and Camp County,” said Judy Jackson, chair of the chamber of commerce’s tourism committee.  “This will increase revenue for merchants and taxes for the city and county, while marketing our best to influence folks to make our home their home and/or to come back and visit often.”
Special guests will be George Fite , city manager of Hughes Springs and member of the Texas Forest Trails board; and Mary Turner, executive director of the Texas Forest Trails Region
