Camp County native Barbara Smith Conrad, an American operatic mezzo-soprano of international acclaim, died during the morning hours of Monday, May 22, in Manhattan, according to a Facebook post by David Kelso’s Voice Studio.
“Barbara was an incredible teacher and friend. She passed on her knowledge of the great Negro Spirituals to many of us,” said David Kelso. “How she saw the Spirituals as America’s great contribution to music literature with the same respect to be given to them as Schubert or Schumann lieder. I’m heartbroken to lose her and so very grateful for all the love and knowledge she shared with me. I quote her every day in my own teaching. Hers is a legacy that I will proudly sing and continue to share with my students”
The 79-year-old was born in Center Point community near Pittsburg in 1940 and was the youngest of five children.

No action was taken by the Pittsburg City Council on the second public hearing held May 8 on the proposed annexation plan of property located at 423 and 431 County Road 2208. 
According to City Secretary Victoria Janway, there were no comments from the public at the public hearing.
The city received a petition requesting annexation by Russell Sawyer. The first public hearing was April 10.
Under state law, the City may annex the area after following certain notice and hearing procedures contained in Chapter 43 of the Texas Local Government Code.
The annexed property is available for services provided by the Pittsburg Police and Fire Departments, as well as animal and environmental services, solid waste collection and water service.

The Pittsburg Farmers Market will be open on Saturdays, May 13 through Aug. 26. The market is 8 a.m. to noon at Texas Country Farm Supply, 409 S. Greer, (Hwy 271) in Pittsburg. 
Local growers offer fresh fall produce. Vendor space is free for those selling produce in its natural state; however, vendors must have a current Pittsburg peddler’s permit. 
Pick up permit forms at the Chamber of Commerce office at 202 Jefferson Street or the Pittsburg Police Department.

MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Carroll Shelby Automotive Technology Program at Northeast Texas Community College will host a Carroll Shelby Memorial Cruise event starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 6 at the Shelby Automotive Technology Building on the NTCC campus beginning at 9 a.m.
The cruise will kick off with an Engine Rev to honor the memory of Shelby, who passed away May 12, 2010. 
Participants will then cruise Shelby’s hometown and the roads he grew up on. There is no charge to participate, but raffle tickets will be sold to benefit the NTCC Shelby Automotive Program and the Carroll Shelby Foundation. A silent auction will also be held.
Shelby was a major supporter of the NTCC automotive program in his later years and he lent both his name and financial support to help ensure that students are able to receive high-quality automotive training right here in northeast Texas. The Carroll Shelby Foundation remains a major supporter of the program.
