Jameis Winston? No thanks.

Ramblings from the  Press Box
by Cory Smith

“I’d like to introduce the new General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys, Cory Smith,” said Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys. I stepped up to the podium, my heart was racing, and I couldn’t believe I was the new, long awaited, General Manager of the team that I have loved since I took my first breath. I took a note from my jacket pocket that had my speech on it. I laid placed it on the podium and looked out on the crowd, I took a deep breath and got ready to start, and then…I woke up. I was that close, if only it wasn’t a dream! Later that same day, I was watching ESPN and they were talking about an incident that had taken place regarding Florida State quarterback, Jameis Winston. Apparently, Winston had gotten up on a table and yelled out a derogatory phrase right in the middle of the Florida State University (FSU) student union building. As a result, he will be suspended for the first half of FSU’s game against Clemson this weekend. At this point, I went back into “general manager mode” and internally asked myself, “If I were an NFL general manager, would I draft Jameis Winston?” It took me about a millisecond to come up with the answer…absolutely, unequivocally, not. If you’re unfamiliar with Winston, he has an embattled past that is chalk full of idiotic decisions and behavior. Now, I’ve been there too, I’ve made some horrendously stupid choices, but I’ve learned from them. Winston either just refuses to learn from his mistakes, or he literally cannot grasp that because of who he is, because of his notoriety, he will be held to a higher standard; everyone watches what he does and says 24/7.
