The city of Mount Pleasant is moving forward with plans to annex land in Camp County that includes the Pilgrim’s Pride/JBS distribution plant and the Region 8 Education Service Center north of town. Texas law allows cities to annex land in other counties so long as it doesn’t include annexing into a city’s current extraterritorial jurisdiction or ETJ (in other words, Mount Pleasant cannot annex land that is inside Pittsburg city limits) and after following certain notice and hearing procedures. The city is required to prepare a proposed service plan describing the services the city of Mount Pleasant will provide to the area upon annexation; hold two public hearings: one was held Oct. 25 and the other will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at Mount Pleasant City Hall, 501 N. Madison St.; and pass a required annexation ordinance. Once these steps are complete, the annexation becomes official. Mount Pleasant has also sent a formal letter of intent to annex and sent notification to property owners in the affected area.
