Commissioners say ‘no’ to federal government

By Debbie Knox

Camp County commissioners voted to enter into a new phone system agreement for jail inmates With Encartele Phone Service. There is no cost to the county with the new company; and in fact, they have the potential to earn revenue with the new company.

Sheriff Alan McCandless made the presentation to the commissioners after being granted more time to go over the contract with the county auditor.

“The other company will pull equipment by the 30th of the month. We’ve been with this company for 18 years. It appears they want to get away from smaller jails,” Sheriff McCandless said.

Commissioners voted unanimously for the Sheriff to proceed with the contract to Encartele.

Fourth graders learn ‘Design an ad’

Fourth graders at Pittsburg Elementary School participated in The Pittsburg Gazette’s “Design an Ad” venture. Teachers helping Gazette Publisher Debbie Knox with the program were: Mary Ruth Townsend, Takeia Lee and Jennifer Poe.

First, children chose a local business from the list. Examples of magazine ads were used to give the children ideas. After their assignment was in place, they wrote a headline to capture the reader’s attention and then designed the ad using crayolas and coloring markers.

Mrs. Knox said it’s been awhile since we’ve worked on this project.

“This is such a fun activity,” Mrs. Knox said. “It’s been more years than I would like to remember since I went to the school to help with this project; although, we have had ad managers who went to teach the children. Luckily, I had some exceptionally good teachers and students this year to help me see the project to an end. ”
