Mason speaks at Pittsburg study club

Ed Hicks is honored with a retirement party at Hibernia Bank. Mr. Hicks has been in the banking business for 40 years.

Pittsburg High School's Senior talent show is Friday night

The Pittsburg High School Senior Class of 2013 will be hosting its annual talent show.  
Come support the senior class on March 8 at 6 p.m. at the high school auditorium.  
There will be 24 high school students performing.
Cost is $5 at the door.

NTCC to host Chick-fil-A® Leadercast® event in May

Northeast Texans can access the knowledge and experience of world-renowned leaders by attending Chick-fil-A® Leadercast® at Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) on May 10.  The event will be held in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts.  Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with the program scheduled to begin at 7:30.
Chick-fil-A Leadercast is a one-day leader development event which is held live in Atlanta, Ga. and is simulcast to hundreds of sites across the world.  Northeast Texas Community College is excited to be one of the host broadcast sites for the 2013 Leadercast.  Speakers for this year’s event include:
•Jack Welch, Former Chairman and CEO of General Electric
•Andy Stanley, Best-selling leadership author and communicator
•Mike Krzyzewski, Head men’s basketball coach, Duke University and Team USA

Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony this Saturday

After years of reaching for the pinnacle in Scouting, two young men from Boy Scout Troop 210 have soared to Eagle status.
The two young men, Charles Walker and Kristopher Dugosh, will be honored on March 2, when they officially receive their Eagle Scout badges. The Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony will be held at First United Methodist Church beginning at 7 p.m.
At a minimum, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, serve in leadership roles within their troop, perform service hours and master a multitude of Scout skills along the way.  Statistically, less than four boys out of 100 who join Boy Scouts will achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Skaggs, Griffis engaged

Allen and Debbie Skaggs of Hughes Springs announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Mary Elizabeth Skaggs, also of Hughes Springs, to W. Kendall Don Griffis of Pittsburg.
The bride-elect is a 2008 graduate of Hughes Springs High School. In May 2011, she received her associates of science degree from Northeast Texas Community College, and in December she will receive her bachelor’s degree in education from Texas A&M Texarkana. Ms. Skaggs is employed at Trico Lumber Company in Hughes Springs. She is the granddaughter of the late Donald and Fayrene Van Huss and the late Robert and Peggy Skaggs.

Enrollment at Northeast Texas Community College reaches an all-time high at 2,423.

Bill McMinn is named Agriculture Producer of the Year at the Camp County Agricultural Appreciation Banquet. Bette Holcomb wins Homemaker of the Year, and Lorene Friday is the Good Samaritan of the Year.
Pittsburg native, the Rev. Louie Belvet George, becomes the first black regent at Baylor University.

PENTECOSTALS OF PITTSBURG
The 11th Hour
Pastor Matthew Taylor of the Pentecostals of Pittsburg invites everyone to join the 11th Hour, where the church will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday- Friday, for anyone who would like to come and find a place to pray, read their Bible, or just relax for a little while during the day.
The church also has a meal area for people to eat their lunches in.
There are no strings attached, and membership is not required.  The church is located at 105 Arch Davis Road.

Pancake Breakfast
The members of the Greater Hope COGIC Youth Department in Mount Pleasant invite the public to a pancake breakfast on March 2 at 8:30 am in the fellowship hall.
The church is located at 1398 Elsye Ave., Mount Pleasant. Turn off West Ferguson onto Elsye (between the Highway Department and Cartmart) or turn off of Highway 67 onto Elsye Avenue.

Latin/Classical violin quartet will play on March 7 at Whatley Center

Northeast Texas Community College will host the La Catrina Quartet for a concert at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on March 7. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
Winners of a 2012 Latin Grammy Award, and hailed by Yo-Yo Ma as wonderful ambassadors of music, the La Catrina Quartet is one of the most sought after ensembles on tour today. Their unique blend of Latin-American and standard repertoire has proved entertaining for its diverse audiences, catering to the more traditional concertgoers while also attracting the next generation of listeners.
“The La Catrina Quartet really puts a unique spin on classical music. They provide a distinctive Latin flair that makes this group stand out in the genre,” said Carolyn Franks, director of the Whatley Center.

Pittsburg Art and Wine Festival planned for April

The inaugural Pittsburg Art and Wine Festival will be held in Pittsburg’s historic district from 1 until 8 p.m. April 27.
The festival will showcase great wines from The Piney Woods Wine Trail including Los Pinos Ranch Vineyard of Pittsburg, Enoch’s Stomp Vineyard of Harleton, Crump Valley Vineyards of Sulphur Springs, and Maydelle Country Wines of Rusk. The event will also feature several artists and art societies from the East Texas area displaying and selling their pieces to the public, as well as music and local culinary treats from Brookshire’s, Kahuna’s BBQ, and NTCC Culinary School for purchase.
Pittsburg Art & Wine Festival tickets are $5 and include a souvenir glass. Winery representatives will be on hand to discuss and sell wines by the taste, the glass or bottle.
The festival is sponsored by Carla and Robert Peoplesm, owners of The Holman House Bed & Breakfast, Cypress Bank and the Pittsburg Main Street Program.
