NTCC-built Shelby Mustang begins week-long race

Four tires, five speeds, two blue Le Mans stripes running down its length and one removable steering wheel – there’s no doubt about it, the 1965 Shelby Panamericana is ready to roll.

The Shelby Mustang was bought by Dallas lawyer Rob Miller off Craigslist a couple of years ago for $800 and rebuilt by students in the Carroll Shelby Automotive Program at Northeast Texas Community College. The car will be put to the test at the La Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico Friday, Oct. 16-Thursday, Oct. 22.

Anyone can follow along with the car’s progress thanks to a GPS tracker inside the car which is linked to the following website http://65shelby.trailer-alarms.com/ The car’s location will be updated every 10 minutes.

God’s Closet seeks additional volunteers

Cars line up along Marshall Street in Pittsburg waiting for a chance to take home a box of free, fresh produce.

Volunteers spend time loading boxes into waiting vehicles until thousands of pounds of food have been handed out. This scene is repeated in Pittsburg twice a month and God’s Closet, the organization that handles the donations, is looking for more volunteers.

The only requirements to be a volunteer are the ability to lift about 20 pounds and wearing closed-toe shoes.

Fresh produce donations are handed out on the first and third Monday of every month beginning at 10:45 a.m. at the back door of God’s Closet, located at 127 Jefferson St. in downtown Pittsburg. The next produce donation will be on Oct. 19.

Council OKs lighting detector partnership with PISD

Randal McKenzie, athletic trainer for Pittsburg High School, talked with Pittsburg City Council Monday, Oct. 5 about the lightning detector system the school is installing.

Mr. McKenzie said the school is seeking a partnership with the city because the detectors will benefit the city and county, as well as the school.

Pittsburg Independent School District is implementing the system for the protection of school children engaged in any outdoor activities either in sports or on the playgrounds.

Several of the city parks will be covered since they will be close to the alarm system, such as Fair Park which includes the city’s newly-built Splash Park.

The alarm horns and strobe will be placed atop the high school auditorium.

Council approved the buy-in of the Thor Guard Lightning Prediction and Warning System in the amount of $6,350, with the caveat that the system be tested first and that the claims of the manufacturer are valid.
