Council OKs lighting detector partnership with PISD

Randal McKenzie, athletic trainer for Pittsburg High School, talked with Pittsburg City Council Monday, Oct. 5 about the lightning detector system the school is installing.

Mr. McKenzie said the school is seeking a partnership with the city because the detectors will benefit the city and county, as well as the school.

Pittsburg Independent School District is implementing the system for the protection of school children engaged in any outdoor activities either in sports or on the playgrounds.

Several of the city parks will be covered since they will be close to the alarm system, such as Fair Park which includes the city’s newly-built Splash Park.

The alarm horns and strobe will be placed atop the high school auditorium.

Council approved the buy-in of the Thor Guard Lightning Prediction and Warning System in the amount of $6,350, with the caveat that the system be tested first and that the claims of the manufacturer are valid.

Council members also presented employment pins to Charles Burns for five years, Clint Hardeman for five years, Cindy Peek for five years, Jerri Sue Proffitt for 10 years, Kathy Neal for 10 years and Tim Reynolds for 30 years.

In other business, the city discussed a policy on how to close city offices and services, other than essential personnel such as police or fire, during inclement weather.
