Wilson named to dean's list

Danin Renee Wilson of Pittsburg was one of 112 students named to the dean’s list at Howard Payne University during the fall 2012 semester. Students must earn a 3.65 to a 3.99 grade point average to be named to the dean’s list.
Ms. Wilson is the daughter of Howard and Renee Wilson.

Skills USA team advancing to State

The Skills USA team at Pittsburg High School attended the District-level competition in Waco. They team did so well that several students also qualified to move to the State level.

Pittsburg High School’s Skills USA team’s competition season got off to a great start in Waco Feb. 8 and 9.
The students have practiced and prepared for months, anticipating the District level contest held at Texas State Technical College. The team competed in various events, and was awarded five individual medals.
“I was very pleased with their success,” said Skills USA Sponsor John Whitten. “I expect them to do well at State.”
In the photography division, Emma Lee placed first, Savanna Carter took second and Terra Eagan third.
“The best part about Waco was qualifying for State and placing higher than I did in the previous year,” said Terra.
Eric Diviney and Daniel Yanez took first place as a duo in web design.
“As a first year competitor in Skills USA, I was very excited to learn that we would be advancing to State,” said Daniel.

Upshur Museum to sponsor appraisal fair

As in years past, some lucky East Texans may strike it rich at the upcoming Historic Upshur Museum’s 10th Annual Appraisal Fair set for Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gilmer’s Yamboree Exhibit Building adjacent to the Civic Center on U.S. Highway 271.
Patterned after the popular “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS, the fair will feature seven experts on antiques and collectibles, including firearms, furniture, glassware, jewelry, coins, currency, Civil War and historic Texas documents, gold, pottery, art and toys. Also showcased will be a variety of special displays, ranging from Civil War memorabilia and vintage jewelry to doll and pottery exhibits.
Admission is free. Cost of appraisals will be $10 per item or three items for $20.
Food and other refreshments will be available, and fair attendees can participate in a silent auction for numerous items provided by museum benefactors and board members.

Winnsboro Livestock Commission Sales for Feb. 15

Shannon Davis of the Winnsboro Livestock Commission, 903-365-2201, reported a total of 574 head of cattle moved through the auction on Feb. 15, at the following prices:
•Baby calves, $25-$385 a head.
•Pairs, $1,100-$1,675 a head.
•Stocker cows $850-$1,500 a head.
•Slaughter cows 60-90 cents a pound.
•Slaughter bulls 85 cents-$1.04 a pound.
•Steers, under 300 pounds, $1.80-$2.80 a pound; 300-400 pounds, $1.45-$2.40 a pound; 400-500 pounds, $1.40-$2.20 a pound; 500 pounds and up, $1.30-$1.85 a pound.
•Heifers, under 300 pounds, $1.50-$2.60 a pound; 300-400 pounds, $1.35-$2.10 a pound; 400-500 pounds, $1.30-$1.85 a pound; 500 pounds and up, $1.15-$1.70 a pound.

Two arrested for burglary

Jamarkus Shakur Rodgers, 17, and Javonta Okieth Morrow, 18, were arrested Feb. 4.
The pair were charged with burglary of a habitation and possession of marijuana.
“At approximately 2:40 p.m. that day, Pittsburg police officers responded to a report of suspicious activity that occurred in the 100 block of Ash Street,” said Police Chief Richard Penn.
“Further investigation showed that a burglary of a habitation had occurred.
“Pittsburg police officers were able to locate two suspects in an adjoining residence and also located evidence connecting the two suspects to the burglary.”
