Lady Pirates pick up pair of district wins

The Lady Pirates improved to 2-1 in district play last week with wins over Atlanta and North Lamar.
Key plays down the stretch were the difference for the Lady Pirates Friday as they earned a 49-39 win on the road at North Lamar.
Pittsburg trailed 37-35 with under a minute to play when Genesis Lopez came up with a steal and was sent to free throw line after a Lady Panther foul. Lopez made one foul shot to cut the Panther lead to just one but Denasia Watson was able to come up with the ball on the missed foul shot to give Pittsburg another possession.
On the ensuing play, Shaundrea Rhymes missed a shot inside, but Jazmine Walker was able to grab the offensive rebound, put the ball through the hoop and draw a foul. Walker sank the foul shot and Pittsburg led 39-37.
The Pittsburg defense forced North Lamar to miss its next shot and Rhymes added another free throw to extend the Pittsburg lead to 40-37 with seven seconds to play. After a Lady Panther hoop cut the lead to one, a Pittsburg turover gave North Lamar one last chance. A heave from near half court fell well off the mark at the buzzer and the Lady Pirates escaped with the win.
Walker led the Pirates in scored in the win with 13 and added 10 rebounds while Watson added nine points. Rhymes finished with seven points and 10 rebounds, Justonni Farmer scored six, Ayanna Palmer and NaKyia Brown each scored two and Lopez added one point in the win.
Pittsburg dominted the court last Tuesday as the Lady Pirates picked up a 56-18 win over visiting Atlanta.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Rabbits got on the scoreboard with a three-pointer more than six minutes into the game.
Pittsburg held the Rabbits to just seven baskets in the game as the Lady Pirated picked up a lopsided victory.
Walker led the way in scoring with 15 points while Watson added 11, Farmer scored eight, Rhymes had seven, Maxie Ivory scored four points, Palmer had three and Lopez, Brown, Brilee Cummings and Hannah McElhaney each scored two.
